Incomar is an aerospace and defence company based in Centurion, South Africa. We are continuously expanding our specialised product development and flight operations capabilities. The group was established in South Africa in 1999, with its origins in military aircraft weapons and avionics integration and flight testing. An MCAD & Tool Designer within the Manufacturing Engineering department plays a critical role in supporting the industrialisation of new products from early prototyping through to full serial production. This position is responsible for conceptualising, designing, and developing specialised moulds, tooling, holding fixtures, and assembly aids that enable efficient, safe, and repeatable production processes, including:

  • Design and develop jigs, fixtures, moulds, gauges and assembly aids for aerospace component manufacture and assembly, from concept through release to production Required to support
  • Analyse engineering drawings and 3D models to define tooling requirements, tolerances and inspection strategies; apply GD&T to achieve required accuracy.
  • Produce detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings, including BOMs and specifications, ensuring compliance with internal and customer standards.
  • Industrialisation of products for prototyping and serial production.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, quality and shop floor personnel to optimise tooling for safety, ergonomics, cost, and producibility.
  • Support build trials, commissioning, troubleshooting and continuous improvement of existing tools; implement design changes and maintain configuration control.
  • Prepare usage instructions, maintenance plans, and inspection criteria; provide training and technical support to production users as needed.

A successful applicant will be working closely with design, manufacturing engineering, supply chain, and production teams. The MCAD & Tool Designer ensures that all solutions meet technical requirements, quality standards, and operational needs throughout the product lifecycle.

Required Qualifications:
  • National Diploma, Bachelor of Technology or relevant technical qualification,
  • Police clearance certificate (required prior to commencement of employment).
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum of 4 years of technical experience in a design and development environment within the aerospace & defence sector.
  • Minimum of 4 years of MCAD modelling and design experience.
  • Experience working with Product Development Management (PDM) software tools.
  • Experience in MCAD geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience in mechanical draughting and the development of technical 2D drawings using relevant CAD tools.
  • Experience in the checking of technical 2D drawings for manufacturing release
  • Knowledge of fasteners, materials, manufacturing and assembly methods applicable to the aerospace & defence industry.
  • Proficient in MS Office (including Word, Excel, Outlook & Teams).
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Knowledge of product development and the "V" life cycle model.
  • Experience in the aerospace, automotive, or precision engineering sectors is advantageous.
  • Experience and knowledge of manufacturing processes for composite materials/products.
  • Strong proficiency in MCAD modelling and draughting for moulds, tooling and fixture design (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Knowledge of applicable standards related to your technical field (e.g. BS8888, AMS, ASTM, MIL-STDs standards).
  • Familiarity with industry standards such as ISO 9001, AS9100, and aerospace-specific regulations.
  • Experience in tolerancing for interchangeability.
  • Experience in inspection methods using CMMs and gauges.
  • Experience in testing and calibration, as well as the use and handling of moulds, tooling, and fixtures.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop detailed tooling concepts, layouts, and 3D CAD models (fixtures, jigs, moulds, dies, assembly aids).
    • Presenting design concepts in reviews.
    • Data analysis and report writing applicable to allocated tasks.
    • Ensuring that customer & project requirements are met.
  • Geometric tolerancing to ensure designs meet manufacturability and serviceability requirements.
  • Specify materials, surface treatments, heat treatments, and any other relevant processes where required.
  • Produce specifications, BOMs, and engineering drawings, for tool fabrication and procurement.
  • Work with suppliers to source, quote, and qualify tool suppliers; manage tool fabrication, acceptance, commissioning.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing engineers to integrate tooling within production lines; support prototype runs and process validation.
  • Troubleshoot tooling issues (wear, alignment, repeatability) and propose corrective actions / improvements.
  • Configuration and configuration management of fixtures, jigs, moulds, dies, assembly aids and tooling documentation & registers.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality and integrity when handling company and customer data and documentation.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within your expertise and skillset.
  • Investigate and introduce new tooling processes/methods and technologies.
  • Executing tasks within agreed to budgets and timescales.
  • Ensure all non-compliances on both safety and quality issues within your area of responsibility are identified and reported timeously.
