Job Title: Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Human Geography
Organisational Unit: University of Mpumalanga -> Teaching and Learning -> Faculty of Agriculture and Natural Science
Job Primary Purpose: The main purpose of the position is to contribute to teaching and learning, research and innovation, engagement, leadership, and administration at the discipline (Human Geography), school and faculty levels.
Key Performance Areas- Leadership - The provision of academic leadership at the module(s) level and in the Human Geography Programme(s).
- Teaching & Learning - Provision of theoretically informed and pedagogically sound teaching based on current research in Human Geography.
- Research - The production of accredited research outputs, postgraduate supervision at Honours and Master's level, and support for Masters' and Doctoral students to graduate in the minimum time.
- Engagement - Participation in engagement activities related to the discipline/profession and the community, involvement in learned societies, and application of discipline/professional knowledge for community benefit.
Highest Qualification: MSc in Human Geography and preferably a Doctoral qualification or progress toward a PhD in Human Geography. PhD in Human Geography
Teaching experience: Some experience with facilitation of learning, possibly as a tutor, and preferably 5 years in university-level facilitation of learning and teaching.
Research: Evidence of research activity such as published papers or conference attendance, a good record of papers in accredited national and international journals, presentations at national and international conferences, and postgraduate supervision at Masters' level with students publishing their research.
Engagement: Preference given to applicants with experience in engagement activities, participation in Human Geography societies, and evidence of extensive engagement benefiting the external community.
Competencies and SkillsDisciplinary knowledge: Good knowledge of the theory and application of the Human Geography discipline; in-depth understanding of the theory and application of the discipline.
Leadership: Understanding of contemporary theories of teaching and learning in higher education, with demonstrated skills in teaching or mentoring; good understanding of leadership and management principles, well-developed leadership and management skills; good interpersonal and communication skills.
Teaching & Learning: Appreciation of modern theories of teaching and learning in higher education; skills as a tutor or mentor; ability to teach online; sound understanding of modern theories of teaching and learning and well-developed teaching skills.
Research: Supervision of undergraduate and honours degrees; well-developed research skills and grant writing.
Engagement: Good record of active participation in Human Geography societies; good understanding of the role of universities in engagement.
