The Department of Chemical Sciences is an academic unit within the Faculty of Science. The core functions of the departmentare teaching,training,andresearch.ThedepartmentissituatedonboththeAPKCampusinAucklandPark,and the DFC campus inJohannesburg.
Responsibilities:
- Beactivelyinvolvedincoreactivitiesofthedepartmentsuchasteaching(generalandorganicchemistry), research, academic administration, short-course development, marketing, and community projects.
- Assumeresponsibilitytoteachmodules(theoryand/orpractical)enlistedfortheChemistryundergraduate programme in the Department.
- Theincumbentwillalsobeexpectedtoparticipateincurriculumdevelopmentandteachmodulesinpostgraduate programmes.
- Annuallypublishpeer-reviewedpapersinaccreditedscientificand/oracademicjournals,anddeliverpapersat national and international conferences, commensurate with the level of appointment.
- Obtainresearchfundingfromexternalfunding bodies.
- PhDinChemistryor equivalent.
- Musthaveteachingexperienceatundergraduate level.
- Thecandidatemustbeabletoteachorganicchemistryatalllevelsandhavesustained,significantresearch outputs in ISI accredited journals.
- Evidenceofcommunityand/orindustrialinvolvementwouldbe beneficial.
- Soundcommunicationskillsin English.
- Excellentteaching skills.
- Abilitytoapplyrelevantskillsinaddressing chemistry problems.
- Abilitytoworkunderpressureandmeettight deadlines.
- Stronginterpersonalrelationshipsaswellastheabilitytocollaboratewith colleagues.
- Teachingexperience,ataHigherEducationInstitutionwillbeanadded advantage.
- Atrackrecordofpost-graduateresearchsupervisionwillbeanadded advantage.
- Shouldfitwiththecurrentresearchthrustsofthedepartment(Catalysis,Medicinalchemistry,Materials chemistry,Water treatment and purification).
- Innovativeteachingtechniquesincorporatingblended learning.
