Institution: Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB NPC)
Location: Bird Island, Addo Elephant National Park (Marine Section), Algoa Bay, Eastern Cape Province
Job type: Full time, 3 year fixed term contract
Reports To- The SANParks Section Ranger (AENP Marine Section) regarding operational, logistics and maintenance activities
- The SANCCOB Gqeberha Centre Manager for rehabilitation requirements and activities
- The SANCCOB Research and Ranger Manager for human resources, seabird monitoring and monthly reporting
Support seabird conservation on Bird Island. Responsible for ecological data collection and management, seabird monitoring, rescue and stabilisation of seabirds, and minor maintenance. Provide administrative support and resource management for visiting researchers.
Key Responsibilities1. On island seabird monitoring and rescue
- Conduct field surveys of seabird condition, nest monitoring, predation events, mortality and moult counts
- Collect ecological (biotic, abiotic, weather) data and input into protocols
- Assist with research projects and census counts as required
- Support implementation of SANParks' Bird Island Management plan
- Manage and compile monthly data and reports
- Rescue and stabilise oiled, injured, sick and abandoned seabirds, mainly African Penguins and Cape Gannets
- Submit written reports and supervise local and international researchers
- Assist with reserve planning and work plan drafting
- Attend training for development and capacity building
2. Legal compliance and occupational health and safety
- Implement OHS policies and guidelines
- Carry out patrol duties and manage observation posts
- Provide educational tours to visitors when stationed at SANCCOB centre
3. Infrastructure and equipment
- Perform minor repairs and maintenance activities
- Maintain the African Penguin stabilisation room and rehabilitation equipment
- Prepare monthly stock take reports and notify management of needed supplies
4. Disaster management
- Maintain preparedness and respond to incidents such as abandonment, pollution and disease outbreaks
- Assist during emergency rescue operations
- Computer literacy: Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, OneDrive)
- Basic GPS/GIS skills and map reading
- Physical fitness and ability to swim
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather
- Problem solving and practical skills (electrical, mechanical)
- Good planning, time management and communication skills
- Knowledge of coastal, marine and island environments; basic seabird identification
- Willingness to work extended hours, weekends and public holidays
- Compassion towards wildlife care and animal welfare
- Valid Code B driver's licence and reliable transport
- South African citizenship or valid work permit
- Acceptance of required vaccinations
- Advantageous: knowledge of marine ecology, environmental legislation, disaster management, experience in information management and seabird stabilisation techniques
Remuneration package commensurate with qualifications, experience and SANCCOB's remuneration model.
