Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in German Studies

The School of Languages and Literatures is looking for suitably qualified candidates to join their team.

All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research), and engaging in community engagement. Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, faculty, and/or university levels.

The Requirements Lecturer
  • A completed MA in German Studies, German as a Foreign Language, German Literature, German Linguistics, or similar. As a probation requirement, candidates will be expected to commit to PhD research if appointed.
  • Some teaching experience is required. The incumbent should be acquainted with online/blended teaching, testing, and marking, or be willing to acquire these skills immediately upon assuming the role through workshop attendance or other developmental opportunities.
  • The ability to teach German as a Foreign Language is essential; candidates must also be able to teach at least one of the following fields: German literature of the 20th and/or 21st centuries, translation in theory and practice, and cultural studies.
  • An ability to supervise postgraduate students is required.
  • Some evidence and experience in conducting research. Evidence of accredited published outputs would be an advantage.
  • Some record of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal).
Senior Lecturer
  • A completed PhD in German Studies, German as a Foreign Language, German Literature, German Linguistics, or similar.
  • Considerable teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required. The incumbent must be acquainted with online/blended teaching, testing, and marking.
  • Experience in teaching German as a Foreign Language is essential; candidates must also have experience in teaching at least one of the following fields: German literature (especially of the 20th and 21st centuries), translation in theory and practice, and cultural studies.
  • Experience supervising postgraduate students is required. Research supervision experience up to at least a Master's degree to completion is required.
  • Emerging national profile in the discipline and a credible record of accredited, peer reviewed publications.
  • Track record of administration, management and/or leadership roles.
Remuneration per annum Lecturer

Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R 667,972.00

Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R 872,722.00

Senior Lecturer

Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R 826,322.00

Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R1,069,564.00
