Work Profile: Candidate Civil Engineer

This position is based at: Johannesburg. The incumbent will function as a Candidate Civil Engineer within the Civil team at Henry Fagan (Pty) Ltd, providing technical support and contributing to the planning, design, analysis, and delivery of civil works and engineering projects under the guidance and supervision of registered professionals.

The role is developmental in nature and is intended to provide the incumbent with the required practical experience and professional exposure toward registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer.

The Candidate Civil Engineer will support civil/structural design, documentation, coordination, and site-related activities in accordance with Henry Fagan's Quality Management System (QMS), project requirements, and professional standards.

This position reports to Head: Civil Engineering.

The incumbent will be based in the Johannesburg office but may be required to assist with projects located outside the Gauteng Province and, where necessary, outside of South Africa.

Responsibilities (not exhaustive) Civil/Structural and Technical Support
  • Assists senior civil/structural engineers and technologists with structural analysis, design calculations, and technical assessments.
  • Prepare and review civil/structural drawings, layouts, reinforcement detailing, and schedules under supervision.
  • Support the preparation of technical reports, design notes, and specifications.
  • Assist with feasibility studies and evaluation of structural design options.
Project Support and Coordination
  • Assist with coordination between internal disciplines, external consultants, and contractors.
  • Participate in project meetings, site meetings, and technical workshops.
  • Support site inspections, condition assessments, and construction monitoring activities.
  • Assist in tracking project deliverables, design changes, and documentation.
Documentation and Quality Management
  • Prepare and maintain civil/structural documentation in accordance with Henry Fagan's QMS and ISO 9001 requirements.
  • Ensure accurate filing, version control, and record-keeping of drawings and calculations.
  • Support internal reviews and quality checks of structural deliverables.
Professional Development
  • Participate in mentoring, training, and on-the-job development activities.
  • Maintain professional development records aligned with ECSA requirements.
  • Demonstrate ethical conduct and adherence to professional standards at all times.
Client and Stakeholder Interaction
  • Support senior team members during client meetings and technical engagements.
  • Assist in responding to technical queries and site-related issues.
  • Maintain a professional and collaborative approach with all project stakeholders.
Job Requirements Qualifications and Experience
  • BSc, or BEng in Civil Engineering.
  • Registration with ECSA as a Candidate Engineer or eligibility for registration.
  • 0 - 2 years post-qualification experience in a civil/structural engineering or built environment setting.
  • Exposure to civil/structural design, drawings, detailing, and construction documentation.
  • Basic knowledge of relevant structural design codes and standards.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Exposure to structural analysis and drafting software is advantageous.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop under supervision.
