Job Description

An established NGO islooking for a proactive, detail-oriented HR Officer to join their expanding ministry. This is a half-day role (09h00 - 13h00), 3 days per week. The role requires regular travel to schools and baby homes across Johannesburg and surrounding areas to support staff and ministry operations. This role goes beyond traditional HR administration - it is an opportunity to serve people with excellence, strengthen organisational culture, and ensure compliance while supporting their mission to positively impact communities.

The HR Officer will play a pivotal role in Employment Equity, payroll coordination, employee relations, recruitment, and HR operations, while upholding Christian values of integrity, fairness, compassion, and stewardship.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Employment Equity & Compliance

  • Drive and manage all Employment Equity (EE) responsibilities
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and monitoring of EE Plans
  • Track workforce demographics and transformation progress
  • Collect, analyse, and maintain accurate EE data
  • Prepare and submit EE reports (EEA2 and EEA4)
  • Support diversity and inclusion initiatives aligned with ministry values
  • Ensure recruitment and promotion practices align with EE objectives
  • Advise management on fair and equitable representation practices
  • Manage all Department of Employment and Labour (DoEL) audits and correspondence

Payroll & HR Administration

  • Coordinate monthly payroll inputs and processes
  • Track employee attendance, overtime, and leave balances
  • Maintain and update employee records (personal details, salaries, banking details, contracts)
  • Administer employee benefits and leave processes
  • Monitor foreign nationality permits and assist with contract renewals
  • Ensure HR documentation is accurate, up to date, and POPIA compliant

Employee Relations & Pastoral Support

  • Assist in handling workplace conflicts, grievances, and disciplinary matters
  • Provide guidance and support to managers on employee-related issues
  • Ensure consistent application of HR policies and fair treatment
  • Support employee wellbeing initiatives with sensitivity and care

Recruitment, Onboarding & Offboarding

  • Support managers throughout the recruitment process
  • Coordinate onboarding and ensure all documentation is completed and signed
  • Facilitate a welcoming and values-aligned induction process
  • Assist with employee exit processes in line with labour legislation and internal policy

Training & Development

  • Drive discussions and administration around Mandatory and Discretionary Grants
  • Coordinate and support staff training and development initiatives
  • Facilitate training sessions where required

HR Operations & Culture

  • Ensure standardisation of HR policies and procedures across all ministry units
  • Support communication of salary increases, bonuses, and employee benefits
  • Coordinate staff meetings, company events, and engagement initiatives
  • Contribute to building a Christ-centred, people-first organisational culture
Requirements
  • Relevant HR qualification (Diploma or Degree)
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in an HR generalist or HR officer role
  • Strong knowledge of South African labour legislation and Employment Equity
  • Experience with payroll coordination and HR administration
  • Valid driver's licence and own reliable vehicle (essential)
  • Willingness to travel regularly to schools and baby homes
  • Strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Alignment with Christian values and comfort working in a faith-based environment
