General Ecologist & Lecturer - South Africa
Job Description
Operation Wallacea is a network of academics from European and North American universities who design and implement long-term biodiversity and conservation management research programmes in countries worldwide.
We are currently recruiting a General Ecologist to lead surveys and deliver lectures at our South Africa terrestrial project in KwaZulu-Natal.
Dates: 15 June - 1 August
The role includes a period of on-site training prior to the arrival of student groups.
This is a varied and hands on position, involving both fieldwork and teaching. Responsibilities will include:
- Co leading vegetation surveys
- Conducting bird point count surveys
- Supporting large game distance sampling surveys
- Overseeing data entry
- Delivering our lecture series to school groups and university students
- Potential for involvement in other surveys, such as camera trapping, light trapping, and opportunistic behaviour observations
- Have an undergraduate degree in a biological or ecological discipline (or higher)
- Have prior fieldwork experience
- Demonstrate survey experience and/or a good understanding of South African flora and fauna
- Strong knowledge of South African bird species
- Ability to identify birds by call
