Job Purpose

Main purpose of the job:

  • Ensure adherence to good governance, institutional integrity and effective administration.
  • Ensure comprehensive secretariat service to the statutory and institutional committees of the University.
  • Direct the efficient and effective delivery of services in governance and high-level coordination of the Secretariat services.
  • Direct all legal advisory services rendered to the university's management, and academic- and support service departments, and ensure effective and efficient management of litigation, contracts and student discipline while ensuring maintenance of regulatory and legislative compliance and good governance.
  • Overseeing the operations of the records and archives management function.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master of Laws (LL.M) Degree or equivalent
  • Admitted Attorney in the High Court of South Africa or Advocate of the South African Bar
  • 10 years' experience practicing law in a private or public sector of which 5 years must have been occupying a management position responsible for a team of lawyers in various fields of specialization.

RECOMMENDED:

  • An additional relevant qualification related to corporate governance will be advantageous
  • Experience in criminal law and criminal procedure would be advantageous
  • Relevant management experience in governance in a higher education (HE) environment with at least three (3) years' experience in serving statutory committees of a higher education institution (Council, Senate and Management).
  • Knowledge and experience of higher education policies and regulations.
  • Knowledge of best practice in corporate governance.

  • Provide functional governance and secretariat support to statutory structures, such as Council, Senate IF, Convocation and committees
