Overview

We are seeking a dynamic Commercial Attorney with a strong background in commercial contracting and exposure to the venture capital, start-up, and broader investment ecosystem.

The ideal candidate will have experience negotiating, drafting, and reviewing complex

commercial agreements, particularly within the venture capital, investment, property/real estate, insurance, or financial services sectors, as well as exposure to compliance and risk management matters.

This role goes beyond traditional legal drafting and advisory work. You will be involved in project management, legal solution development, technology-enabled initiatives, and client engagement. The successful candidate will contribute to delivering strategic, commercially focused legal support while assisting with broader project implementation initiatives.

Minimum Requirements
  • LLB or equivalent legal degree and admitted attorney.
  • Minimum of 2 years' post-qualification experience (PQE) in a commercial legal environment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in commercial contracting.
  • Proven track record in negotiating and drafting commercial agreements within the venture capital, investment, property/real estate, insurance, or financial services sectors.
  • Solid understanding of commercial transactions, with exposure to venture capital agreements.
  • Based in Cape Town.
Key Responsibilities
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial contracts.
  • Ensure contractual compliance with applicable legislation, client policies, and industry standards.
  • Identify and assess legal risks in commercial agreements, providing practical risk mitigation strategies.
  • Conduct negotiations with suppliers and third parties to achieve commercially favourable outcomes.
  • Analyse complex legal issues and provide clear, business-focused advice.
  • Support project implementation, including legal solution development and technology-enabled initiatives.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate effectively within a legal team, demonstrating accountability and initiative.
  • Apply strategic thinking and strong problem-solving skills to address legal and business challenges.
  • Thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities efficiently.
