Job Description

The Artisan Aide provides support to qualified fitters and artisans in maintaining, repairing, and installing mechanical equipment in manufacturing operations. The role focuses on ensuring equipment reliability, minimizing downtime, and maintaining a safe working environment in compliance with site-specific safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist fitters with maintenance and repair of plant equipment such as conveyors, pumps, gearboxes and motors
  • Support breakdown maintenance and planned preventative maintenance (PM) activities
  • Handle and transport tools, equipment, and spare parts safely
  • Perform basic mechanical tasks (e.g., lubrication, bolt tightening, cleaning components)
  • Assist with installations, alignments, and equipment commissioning
  • Maintain housekeeping standards in workshops and plant areas
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, hazards, or faulty equipment
  • Adhere to lockout procedures and safety protocols during maintenance work
  • Complete basic checklists and assist with maintenance records
  • Collections and delivery of spares, gas & diesel
  • General painting in & around the plant
  • Perform handyman duties where necessary
Skills and Competencies
  • Basic mechanical and technical aptitude
  • Strong awareness of safety practices (e.g., lockout/tagout)
  • Ability to follow instructions and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • Attention to detail and problem awareness
  • Physically fit and able to work in demanding conditions
  • Reliability and strong work ethic
Education and Experience
  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • Mechanical training (advantageous)
  • Previous experience in mining, plant, or manufacturing environment (preferred)
Additional Requirements
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical tools and workshop practices
  • Must be able to work at heights or in confined spaces
  • Willingness to work shifts, overtime, and standby when required
