Job Description

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The core purpose of the job is teaching and learning, research and innovation, community engagement, and administration and management, as well as to provide support to the Department/Faculty in the University's and Faculty's strategic intentions on Revitalization of the Humanities, and in pursuit of the Public Management and Leadership (PML) Department's academic objectives. In addition to the above, responsibilities may also include curriculum development, monitoring and evaluation of modules/programmes, student academic development, administration, quality assurance, planning of work integrated learning, academic management, and fostering disciplinary and transdisciplinary networks.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
  • Contribute to existing undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in the discipline of Public Administration and Management through e-learning, lecturing, tutorials and assessment.
  • Participate in curriculum review and the development of new courses/modules to ensure alignment with sector/discipline norms and requirements.
  • Planning, organising, leading, and review of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) and the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programmes.
  • Supervise postgraduate students.
  • Identify students at risk timeously and develop intervention strategies.
  • Implement policies and procedures applicable to the teaching and learning, community engagement, research, and academic administration functions.
  • Keep abreast of developments within own field of study and its implications for teaching and learning, community engagement and research.
  • Develop relevant reports as and when required and communicate and consult with relevant stakeholders.
CORE COMPETENCIES
  • Disciplinary Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of the theoretical and disciplinary foundations of Public Administration.
  • Specialisation: Technical/ professional knowledge and skill in Public Administration and its application to Ethical Leadership in Public Governance, Public Policy /Policy Design and Management, Public Finance and Supply Chain Management, Disaster and Risk Management, and with a solid publishing track record in these areas.
  • Professional Capacity: Formal presentation, Professional and ethical standards, facilitating change, Student focus, Impact-driven thinking, Continuous learning, Building interpersonal relationships and partnerships, Communication (verbal and written), Decision-making, problem-solving and affiliation and involvement in relevant Public Administration associations.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work in a team in a rapidly changing higher education environment and managing conflict in the workplace.
  • Leadership: Coaching and mentoring.
REQUIREMENTS
  • PhD in the field of Public Administration/Management and relevant qualifications in Public Administration.
  • A relevant undergraduate, Honours and Masters qualification in the discipline of Public Administration.
  • Strong foundational knowledge.
  • Specialised and related postgraduate qualification(s) in the areas of specialisation would be an added advantage.
  • At least five years teaching and research experience in the discipline of Public Administration.
  • Evidence of high-level participation and contribution in an institutional/departmental research programme with evidence of publications in accredited journal/s in the discipline of Public Administration.
  • Substantial experience of postgraduate research supervision.
  • Evidence of successful curriculum development and academic management.
  • Evidence of active participation in professional, industry and/or community activities.
