Senior Lecturer/Lecturer Clinical Co-ordinator District Hospital Health Sciences
Job Description
This post reports to the Head of Family Medicine at NMU. The key responsibilities are to:
- Coordinate the delivery of quality teaching and learning of medical students at the clinical training sites (Andries Vosloo Hospital or Settlers Hospital).
- Coordinate and conduct relevant assessments of students on the clinical platforms.
- Provide supervision and mentorship of students at the clinical sites.
- Enhance the development of fit for purpose primary healthcare-oriented graduates.
- Foster positive relationships between the university and relevant stakeholders.
- Provide specialist Family Medicine consultant services at district hospital level.
- Be based at one of the health facilities in the Sarah Baartman District (Andries Vosloo Hospital or Settlers Hospital) for on site academic activities including supervision of students as required by the Discipline.
- Develop and manage the clinical training program of medical students at clinical sites.
- Support MBCHB curriculum development regarding Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships (LICs).
- Support and contribute to interprofessional learning and collaborative practice.
- Engage in scholarship of higher education.
- Establish and build relationships on the distributed clinical platform for the Longitudinal District Hospital Clinical Placement.
- Support clinical services at the district hospital as a consultant Family Physician.
- Support clinical governance at the district hospital as a consultant Family Physician.
- Work collaboratively with staff and management at clinical sites.
- Contribute to continuing professional development of health professionals at clinical training sites.
- Engage in research activities, including the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate Health Sciences students.
- Knowledge and understanding of Primary Health Care and the District Health system in South Africa.
- Knowledge, skills and expertise appropriate for a specialist Family Physician.
- Experience in teaching undergraduate health professional students and as a clinical preceptor.
- Interest and engagement in Health Professions Education.
- Ability to work flexibly in cross functional teams in the teaching and development of students in the Medical School and Faculty of Health Sciences.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team.
- Recognise and deal with cultural diversity, and establish trust, credibility and respect with the medical programme team, medical students and the clinical team at the district hospital.
- Experience in engaging with relevant committees including community engagement.
- Ability to consult and provide advice, facilitate discussion and resolve any areas of conflict.
Education: MBChB degree (or equivalent HPCSA registrable qualification), Masters or Fellowship in Family Medicine, Registered with the HPCSA as an Independent Practitioner and as a Family Medicine Specialist. A postgraduate qualification in Health Professions Education will be an advantage.
Experience and skills:
- Minimum of 5 years' clinical work experience as an independent Medical Practitioner in South African public and/or private health facilities.
- Minimum of 3 years' work experience in teaching and learning.
- Valid code 08 driver's licence.
- Computer literate in Microsoft Office packages.
