Job Description

The Senior Labour Support Specialist is the drafting and advisory backbone of the employment law practice, providing office-based legal support to attorneys and consultants in the field. The role focuses on preparing legal documentation, managing client queries, coordinating case logistics, and ensuring all practitioners are fully equipped with accurate, well-researched, and professionally drafted materials.

Special Requirements
  • LLB Degree (essential)
  • Admission as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa (essential) or equivalent legal qualification with extensive practical experience
  • LLM in Labour Law or postgraduate diploma in employment law (advantageous)
  • Minimum 5-8 years' experience in labour law, with a strong emphasis on legal drafting and documentation
  • Proven track record in drafting pleadings, heads of argument, legal opinions, contracts, policies, and settlement agreements
  • Extensive knowledge of the Labour Relations Act (LRA), Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Employment Equity Act (EEA), Immigration Act 13 of 2002, and the 2025 Code of Good Practice: Dismissal
  • Thorough understanding of CCMA, bargaining council, Labour Court, and Labour Appeal Court processes and procedural requirements
  • Familiarity with the Court Online/Caselines electronic filing system (mandatory from April 2025)
  • Exceptional written English and legal drafting skills - this is a drafting intensive role
  • Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), legal research and case management systems
  • Strong organisational, administrative, and time management skills
  • Ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously under tight deadlines
  • Excellent client liaison and communication skills (telephonic and written)
  • High attention to detail and quality assurance orientation
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Professional demeanour, discretion, and confidentiality
  • This is an office based position - the incumbent is not required to attend hearings, arbitrations, or court proceedings but must be capable of preparing all documentation for those who do

Key Performance Indicators
  • Quality, accuracy, and completeness of all drafted documentation (pleadings, opinions, contracts, policies, hearing bundles)
  • Turnaround time on drafting instructions - ability to produce hearing ready documentation within tight deadlines
  • Responsiveness to client queries and practitioner requests - no queries left unattended
  • Compliance with all statutory filing deadlines and Labour Court procedural requirements
  • Accuracy and currency of precedent library, templates, and policy documents
  • Client satisfaction and feedback on documentation quality and communication
  • Effective coordination of matter logistics: hearings scheduled, files prepared, bundles compiled on time
  • Team support: quality of mentorship and supervision of junior staff
  • Demonstrated knowledge currency with legislative amendments and evolving case law
Working Conditions
  • Office-based position - the incumbent is not required to attend hearings, arbitrations, or court proceedings
  • High-volume drafting environment with tight and often competing deadlines
  • Must be available during business hours to receive and respond to client queries and practitioner requests in real time
  • Extended hours may be required during urgent applications, retrenchment consultations, or trial preparation periods
  • Regular interaction with clients (telephonic and email), practitioners, advocates, court officials, and CCMA/bargaining council administrators
  • Proficiency with Caselines, Court Online, and electronic filing systems is mandatory
