Senior Backend Engineer

Our global team of 50+ professionals is headquartered in Cape Town, with commercial presence in the USA, Australia, Europe, Africa and South America.

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer who can take difficult problems from concept to production. This role spans Aerobotics' stack across backend services, data pipelines, and algorithmic logic where you'll build the systems behind TrueFruit - our yield product, serving farmers across 18 countries. This is not a narrow specialist role, it requires strong engineering judgment and the ability to ship.

• Own problems end-to-end: from a loosely defined need through system design, implementation, and production deployment, including any supporting internal tooling required along the way. Architects will support scaling efforts, but competence at that level is expected from you too.
• Build and maintain backend systems and data pipelines that process image-derived agricultural data at scale.
• Solve algorithmic problems around how we extract, transform, and serve insights from imagery working at the intersection of software engineering and data.

• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience, ideally in Python, with a track record of shipping production systems at tech-driven companies.
• Demonstrated experience designing and building systems from scratch, not just contributing to existing ones
• Experience building and operating systems that run at scale
• Ability to move fast and make deliberate trade-offs between rigour and speed, and to justify those decisions.
• Proven ability to disambiguate vague problems and drive them to shipped solutions.

• Experience with data science or algorithmic problem-solving beyond standard application development.
• Front-end experience (React or similar) for internal tooling.
• Exposure to computer vision or ML systems
