Samango Monkey Internship in South Africa Lajuma Research Centre
Job Description
The Lajuma Research Centre, located in the Soutpansberg Mountains of Limpopo, has served as a base for wildlife research for more than two decades. The region is home to all five South African primate species, including the endangered samango monkey (Cercopithecus albogularis schwarzi). This project contributes to long-term research on samango behaviour, ecology, and conservation, supporting efforts to protect the forests and wildlife of this unique mountain landscape.
Internship OverviewInterns play a key role in behavioural and dietary data collection, contributing to a long-running study of samango monkey ecology. This internship provides experience in primate fieldwork, ecological monitoring, and systematic data recording.
Key Activities- Conducting structured behavioural observations
- Recording feeding ecology (fruits, leaves, insects, and other food sources)
- Monitoring troop movements, vocalisations, and social interactions
- Assisting with ongoing data organisation and field reporting
All fieldwork is carried out on foot, often over uneven terrain and in variable weather. Students should be comfortable living remotely, hiking, and have a basic level of fitness.
Eligibility- Open to students, recent graduates, or individuals interested in primatology, animal behaviour, or conservation
- Basic understanding of animal behaviour studies will be advantageous.
A minimum stay of 8 weeks is recommended.
Conservation FeeA conservation fee is required, which directly supports conservation and research efforts and includes:
- Shared accommodation
- Pick-up and drop-off from/to Louis Trichardt
- Fortnightly town trips for supplies
