Job Description

Operation Wallacea is a network of academics from European and North American universities who design and implement long-term biodiversity and conservation management research programmes in countries worldwide.

We are currently recruiting an Ornithologist qualified ringer to lead surveys and deliver lectures at our South Africa terrestrial site project in Somkhanda. Preferably with SAFRING licence, if not, willing to go through the process to get certified.

Dates: 15 June - 1 August
The role includes a period of on-site training prior to the arrival of student groups.

Role overview

This is a varied and hands-on position, involving both fieldwork and teaching. Responsibilities will include:

  • Co-leading vegetation surveys
  • Conducting bird point count surveys
  • Supporting large game distance sampling surveys
  • Overseeing data entry
  • Delivering our lecture series to school groups and university students
  • Potential for involvement in other surveys such as camera trapping, light trapping, opportunistic behaviour observations
Essential requirements

Applicants should:

  • Have an undergraduate degree in a biological or ecological discipline (or higher)
  • Hold a C-permit licence, qualified ringer
  • Demonstrate survey experience
Desirable skills
  • Strong knowledge of South African bird species
  • Ability to identify birds by call
