Job Description

Purpose

The Faculty of Education invites applications for a Lecturer position under the New Generation of Academic Scholars Programme (NGAP), which is a nationally funded programme aimed at developing the next generation of academics through a structured and supported career-development pathway.

The successful candidate will be appointed in the Department of Mathematics, Sciences and Technology Teaching as a lecturer in Sustainable Energy Education, while receiving reduced teaching loads and structured mentorship to support the completion of a doctoral qualification, development of teaching competence, and establishment of a research profile in Sustainable Energy Education. The incumbent will contribute to undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching, curriculum development, and academic activities within the department, in line with the objectives of the NGAP programme as well as the institution.

Minimum Requirements
  • A master's degree in education specialising in Environmental Education, Energy Studies, Engineering Education, or a related field.
  • Minimum average of 70% at master's level.
  • Applicants must be 40 years and younger.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration for a PhD programme in Sustainable Energy Education or a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest and potential in sustainable energy and environmental education.
  • South African citizenship or permanent residence (priority given to South African citizens)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Commitment to completing a PhD within the programme timeframe
Recommendations
  • Prior teaching experience at a basic or higher education level
  • Research outputs (publications, conference presentations, or working papers)
  • Knowledge of renewable energy technologies and sustainability principles.
  • Community engagement experience in environmental or energy education
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Register for and complete a doctoral degree within the programme period.
  • Teach undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses in Sustainable Energy Education and related areas (workload increases progressively from 20% to 100%).
  • Develop a sustainable research profile and contribute to the Faculty's research output.
  • Participate in curriculum development and innovation in Sustainable Energy Education.
  • Engage actively in the nGAP mentoring programme and SSAU Development Programme.
  • Participate in Faculty, School, and University activities and committees.
  • Contribute to community engagement initiatives.
  • Present research at conferences and publish in accredited journals.
  • Submit annual progress reports as required by the nGAP programme.
  • Remain at SPU for 2 years after programme completion to contribute to institutional development.
