Job Purpose

To support the department in pursuit of its academic objectives, which include teaching on the Dental Assisting and Dental Technology programmes, undertaking research, contributing to curriculum development, as well as engaging in work-integrated learning and community engagement activities. Meeting core academic expectations to facilitate the delivery of the Dental Assisting and Dental Technology programmes offered in the department, as well as perform all related academic, research and administrative tasks associated with the academic role, department, faculty and institution.

The incumbent will be responsible for establishing, managing and overseeing the operations of the departmental dental clinic as an integral component of the Department's community engagement mandate and teaching and learning. The role requires provision of comprehensive clinical dental services in full compliance with the ethical standards and regulations of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Master's degree in the dental-related field with a degree in Dentistry as an undergraduate.
  • Registration in good standing with the HPCSA as a dentist, with independent practice status.
  • At least two (2) years' relevant teaching experience in Higher Education with 5 years' professional work experience in the Dental Field.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with lecturing experience.

  • Postgraduate teaching qualification.
  • Knowledge of all subjects associated with the dental technology and dental assisting programmes.
Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities
  • Lecturing and assessment of aspects of dental technology and Dental Assisting.
  • Establish and oversee the operations of the departmental dental clinic.
  • Provide clinical dental services in accordance with HPCSA regulations and ethical standards.
  • Lead and coordinate community engagement initiatives through the dental clinic, including outreach and service-learning activities.
  • Supervise and mentor students during clinical training where applicable.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control, clinical governance, and quality assurance standards.
  • Demonstrating dental assisting procedures and supervision of practical sessions.
  • Develop course material and innovative teaching and learning methods.
  • Identify at risk students, develop intervention strategies and monitor student progress.
  • Integrate academic support, especially in literacy and numeracy, into their subject teaching.
  • Plan, co-ordinate and supervise academic activities.
  • Participate in curriculum development and quality assurance of the programmes.
  • Academic administration, assessment and subject management.
  • Liaison with the dentistry and dental technology professionals.
  • Contribute to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for the Dental practitioners.
  • Conduct research and contribute towards departmental research outputs.
  • Proficient in all aspects of dental technology, dental assisting and academic activities related to higher education.
