Lecturer: Academic Development (6-month contract)

The responsibilities of this position include:

  • Provide training, academic and pedagogical support to tutors and teaching assistants through mentoring, consultations, and reflective practice sessions.
  • Monitor tutor and TA performance through observations, feedback surveys, reports, and reflective submissions.
  • Address challenges related to classroom practice, communication, student engagement, or professional conduct.
  • Support tutors and TAs in managing diverse student needs and learning barriers.
  • Support faculties in ensuring compliance with institutional policies and employment requirements for tutors and TAs.
Job Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
  • A relevant master's degree (e.g. MA in Education, M. Phil in Higher Education, or an equivalent)
  • At least 2 years' relevant experience in Higher Education, one of which must be in training and development
  • Relevant experience in student Academic Development and Support
  • Ability to teach in English, isiXhosa, and/or Afrikaans
Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities
  • Provide academic development and support to staff and students
  • Develop academic development print and online materials and resources for the use of students and staff
  • Assist academic staff to integrate peer support into their subjects and programmes
  • Conduct research and publish on academic development in higher education, peer support and student engagement or other relevant areas
  • Performs appropriate academic and administrative duties in the Department
  • Perform other functions as may be assigned by the Head of Department
  • Contribute to new student (first year) orientation
  • Good planning, administrative and organisational skills, Presentation skills

  • Coaching and mentoring
  • Aptitude for continuous learning
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Comprehensive reporting skills (verbal and written)
