Introduction

ARE YOU OUR NEXT DRIVER TRAINER? City Logistics is seeking Training Officers for their Brentwood, Durban, Gosforth Park and Cape Town offices. The Driver Training Officer is responsible for developing, implementing and executing driver training programmes that improve driver capability, safety performance, compliance and overall fleet efficiency. The role ensures that drivers are equipped with the practical, technical and behavioural skills required to meet operational, legislative and customer requirements. The Driver Trainer also supports the transport function through assessments, coaching, refresher training, compliance support and operational alignment, while fulfilling Van Assistant duties during practical training to ensure training remains realistic, hands on and aligned to delivery execution requirements.

Core focus areas
  • Assess current driver performance and identify training needs.
  • Conduct refresher training to improve safety, fuel efficiency and driving behaviour.
  • Implement interventions aimed at reducing maintenance costs, breakdowns and tyre wear.
  • Measure and report on improvements in driver performance and fleet efficiencies.
  • Deliver practical and theoretical training covering defensive driving, vehicle inspections, basic mechanical awareness, load securing and handling, hazard identification and risk management.
  • Train drivers on the delivery system, On Route, and related transport technology platforms to ensure accurate usage, route execution, proof of delivery processes, and real time operational compliance.
  • Coach drivers on advanced vehicle technologies and telematics systems.
  • Monitor skills application through on road assessments and follow up coaching.
  • Fulfil Van Assistant duties during practical training sessions to support loading, offloading, delivery execution and customer service requirements where applicable.
  • Support HR in delivering toolbox talks, safety briefings and compliance related training.
  • Assist in onboarding new drivers to ensure understanding of company policies, transport procedures and expected standards.
  • Coordinate and maintain training records in line with company requirements.
  • Promote a safety first culture across the transport function.
  • Work closely with Operations to ensure training aligns with operational processes, customer expectations, vehicle model changes, fleet upgrades and updated transport procedures.
  • Engage with relevant stakeholders to understand customer standards and incorporate these into training programmes.
  • Ensure training remains practical and aligned to operational realities.
  • Analyse telematics, fuel consumption and incident data to identify training needs and improve interventions.
  • Conduct incident investigations (via risk department if needed) and recommend corrective action training.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives within the transport division.
  • Ensure all training material, SOPs and guidance documents remain current and relevant.
Minimum requirements
  • Matric / Grade 12.
  • Valid Code 14 driver's licence with PrDP.
  • Formal driver training qualification or certification.
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in professional driving and/or driver training.
  • Strong understanding of transport regulations, fleet operations and safety standards.
  • Experience in practical driver coaching, on road assessments and refresher training.
  • Exposure to telematics, fuel consumption monitoring and incident analysis.
Additional requirements
  • Experience in training within a logistics, fleet or transport environment.
  • Experience supporting onboarding, toolbox talks, safety briefings and compliance related training.
  • Experience working cross functionally with HR, Operations and Fleet teams.
  • Must be able and willing to travel as required for training, assessments, route evaluations and operational support.
  • Must be willing to work additional hours, including weekends or after hours, based on operational needs.
  • Must be willing to undergo a monthly polygraph test as part of the company's anti bribery and integrity assurance processes.
