Deputy Director 1: Environmental Management
Job Description
The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) seeks a self motivated, professional individual to provide policy advice on the most appropriate policy and legislative solutions for ensuring that environmental management and ecological infrastructure are adequately integrated into ecosystem based disaster risk reduction (Eco DRR) interventions. The role will enhance the resilience of communities and critical built infrastructure against climate induced hazards in four District Municipalities of South Africa.
Qualifications & Experience• Degree in Environmental Sciences or equivalent relevant qualification at NQF 7, focused on environmental management. A post graduate qualification at NQF 8 is an added advantage.
• 8 years of work experience in environmental policy implementation and/or advisory capacity, with at least 4 years in first line management positions.
• Possession of a short course in specialised application of law and policy in environmental management domains (e.g. Environmental Impact Assessment; Coastal Management, etc).
• Valid driver's licence with at least one year of practical driving experience and willingness to travel.
- Provide strategic leadership and policy advice on the most effective environmental management approaches to mainstream Eco DRR and ecological infrastructure interventions in four District Municipalities of South Africa.
- Ensure effective operational management of engagements between SANBI and other organisations and stakeholders, with regard to environmental and Eco DRR regulatory advice.
- Lead capacity development initiatives among officials in four Districts to incorporate biodiversity priorities and Eco DRR considerations in their work.
- Lead the compilation of a baseline assessment of existing risk management frameworks, tools and approaches for ecological and built infrastructure in the four Districts.
