Country Medical Director
Job Description
Lead medical governance and execution for GSK's Pharma and Vaccines activities in South Africa. Provide strategic medical and scientific leadership, ensure high standards of medical governance and patient safety, and enable evidence based use of GSK products through non promotional medical engagement.
Key responsibilities- Provide visible medical leadership and accountability for medical governance across the local organisation, including Pharma, Vaccines and affiliated partner portfolios.
- Lead the Medical Department to deliver high quality medical and scientific input to commercial and development activities; ensure Medical Plans are executed to timelines and outcomes.
- Ensure HCPs (and patients where appropriate) receive accurate, evidence based information via medical information, scientific engagement and educational programmes that align with GSK standards and local regulations.
- Embed the GSK Code of Practice and values based decision making across the LOC.
- Chair/steer local Medical Governance Committee and contribute actively to local RMCB and crisis management processes to uphold medical governance standards.
- Oversee processes for Medical Information and ensure appropriate response and documentation.
- Provide medical input and governance for local HTA submissions, HEOR activities and publications in partnership with central functions.
- Full accountability for pharmacovigilance, materiovigilance and human safety for marketed products and clinical programmes; ensure systems and processes meet local regulations and GSK global requirements.
- Partner with GM and cross functional leads to manage relationships with commercial partners and ensure aligned medical oversight.
- Develop and retain high potential medical talent, ensure succession planning for key medical roles and foster an inclusive leadership culture.
- Medical degree (MBChB/MBBS or equivalent).
- Postgraduate qualification in management or pharmaceutical medicine highly desirable.
- Minimum 5 years' industry experience in medical functions with senior leadership responsibility across medical affairs, clinical operations, pharmacovigilance, medical governance and team management experience.
- Strong grounding in clinical, medical and pharmaceutical science; experience evaluating and communicating evidence based medicine.
- Experience in preparing and reviewing HTA/HEOR inputs and scientific publications.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; proven leadership and people management experience.
- Project management experience or certification; ability to manage complex cross functional projects.
- Digital literacy (MS Office and literature search tools).
- Knowledge of South African legislation relevant to medical product advertising, registration, importation, storage and sale.
- Good command of written and spoken English; driving licence preferred.
- Clinical practice or clinical research experience in relevant therapeutic areas.
- Experience in vaccine and oncology therapeutic areas.
- Experience working in multicultural and matrix organisations.
