At Sedna, we're building the future with robotics. Our work is in integrating robotics and automation into industries like construction and mining. If you're passionate about cutting edge technology, solving complex problems, and building systems that push the limits of what is possible in robotics and automation, Sedna is where your skills can make a global impact.
We are a US based company with strong South African roots. Our business started in Joburg in 2005 and later moved to the USA. We are now building out our engineering offices' in Cape Town (Century City) and Joburg (Greenstone Hill) to support our US operations and customers.
Job OverviewWe are seeking a skilled Civil Engineer to join our innovative team, focusing on the intersection of civil engineering and software development. In this role, you will provide domain expertise to support the creation of software tools that seamlessly integrate with Building Information Modelling (BIM) platforms. Your contributions will enhance project efficiency by incorporating real world construction insights, developing detailed schedules, and crafting comprehensive plans for civil infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, water systems, and urban developments. This position bridges traditional engineering with cutting edge technology, ideal for a professional passionate about advancing the construction industry through digital solutions.
Key Responsibilities- Collaborate with software developers and product teams to design and implement features that integrate into BIM models (e.g., Autodesk Revit, Bentley Systems, or similar), ensuring accurate representation of civil engineering elements like site grading, drainage, and structural components.
- Provide expert guidance on the construction process, including material selection, regulatory compliance, safety standards, and best practices, to inform software functionality and user workflows.
- Develop and optimise project schedules using tools like Primavera P6, incorporating timelines for procurement, site preparation, construction phases, and handover.
- Create detailed civil project plans, including cost estimates, resource allocation, risk assessments, and mitigation strategies, tailored to specific project scopes such as transportation infrastructure or environmental engineering initiatives.
- Conduct reviews and simulations within BIM environments to validate software integrations, identifying potential issues in design, constructability, or clash detection.
- Participate in cross functional meetings to translate engineering requirements into technical specifications, ensuring software outputs align with industry standards (e.g., ASCE, ACI, or local building codes).
- Stay updated on emerging technologies in BIM, AI driven planning, and sustainable construction practices to recommend improvements to software tools.
- Assist in testing and iterating software prototypes, providing feedback from a civil engineering perspective to enhance usability and accuracy.
- Document processes, create training materials, and support end users (e.g., project managers, architects) in adopting the integrated software solutions.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field; Master's degree preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) license is a strong plus.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years in civil engineering, with hands on involvement in construction projects. At least 2 years of experience working with BIM software and digital modelling tools. Prior exposure to software development or agile methodologies is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of sustainable practices and green building standards (e.g., LEED) is advantageous.
- Proficiency in BIM platforms (e.g., Revit, Civil 3D, Navisworks) and integration APIs.
- Strong knowledge of construction management software for scheduling and planning (e.g., MS Project, Oracle Primavera).
- Familiarity with programming concepts or scripting (e.g., Python, Dynamo for Revit) to collaborate effectively with developers.
- Understanding of civil project lifecycle, from feasibility studies to post construction evaluation.
- Excellent communication skills to articulate complex engineering concepts to non technical stakeholders.
- Analytical mindset with problem solving abilities for troubleshooting integration challenges.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high quality, compliant project deliverables.
- Flexible work environment with options for remote/hybrid arrangements.
- Chance to contribute to groundbreaking software that transforms the civil engineering field.
