Northrop Grumman Marine systems is seeking a Materials Engineer Level 3/4 onsite to participate in the development and ongoing support of new and existing steam turbine designs used in surface ship, submarine propulsion and power generation systems for the US Navy. This position is onsite at Sunnyvale, CA. This position is for a dynamic role within Northrop Grumman’s Marine Systems Materials Engineering and Test Laboratory (METL) department. This is a fast-paced environment where the team provides materials engineering expertise and laboratory services to our Sunnyvale production environment, design engineering, partner suppliers, and Navy & Shipyard customers. This position will predominantly support propulsion and power generation activities on the upcoming Columbia class of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines. An ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate fundamental materials and/or weld engineering expertise and will have a strong background in metallurgical and weld processes for ferrous materials. This position requires a practical understanding of metallurgy, forming processes, metallographic evaluation, non-destructive test methods, heat treatments, corrosion control, and how to conduct root-cause investigations. Knowledge of common U.S. military and commercial standards for specifying and evaluating the performance of ferrous materials is expected. Familiarity with common commercial weld codes and NavSea technical publications are a plus. Prior experiences operating under U.S. Department of Defense contracts are also beneficial. Regular Activities In This Role Will Include The Following • Collaborating with more senior members of staff to provide materials engineering expertise during design. • Engineering technical guidance and oversight when quality concerns arise during production. • Review and approval of supplier manufacturing procedures. • Working with and providing guidance to test engineers on characterization activities. • Regular collaboration with design engineering, advanced development, manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, and the internal environmental, health and safety teams. You will be responsible for conducting tribological testing in a liquid sodium environment to support the performance requirements of the Natrium Reactor. Your role will include testing the friction and wear performance of structural materials and coatings to provide key design data inputs for sodium fast reactor design. Responsibilities: • Conduct hands-on tribology testing and material characterization in a laboratory environment • Assist with the design, fabrication, and operation of custom laboratory experiments • Act as the custodian and expert operator of laboratory equipment (e.g., tribology rig, furnaces, polishing equipment, metallography equipment, SEM-EDS), developing procedures and training users to the procedures • Perform material characterization including SEM-EDS for various materials • Perform scientific analysis and generate test reports detailing tests and resulting data to document new knowledge related to materials performance and behavior • Perform formal receipt inspections of incoming materials, update inventory, and physically maintain the controlled material storage area • External procurements of materials, equipment, and testing services, including authoring procurement requisitions and managing supplier performance to plan Key Qualifications and Skills • Bachelor’s degree with minimum 4 years of related experience; or a Master’s degree. The Cai Soft Biomatter Laboratory (http://softbiomatter.org/) at the University of Virginia is seeking to fill a Postdoctoral Researcher position in Polymers and Soft Bio(Materials). The project will focus on synthesis, understanding, and applications of bottlebrush polymers. This project is based on our recent discovery of foldable bottlebrush polymers, which feature a collapsed backbone densely grafted with many short side chains [Science Advances, 2024; front cover; https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adq3080]. Unlike classical linear polymers, mechanical, physical, and biochemical complexities can be independently encoded into the molecular architecture of foldable bottlebrush polymers. This feature allows foldable bottlebrush polymers to emerge as a platform for soft (bio)materials design and innovation. The candidate will again a closed-loop training integrating chemical synthesis, in situ characterization, theory, advanced manufacturing, and translation within the group. Additionally, the candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with clinicians to directly apply the developed the technology and biomaterials to clinical settings. Additional responsibilities include managing laboratory facilities, performing measurements, updating equipment, developing procedures for operation and safety, supporting undergraduate/graduate research and fielding questions regarding procedures.
