The Department of Video Technology plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of film and television creators, digital storytellers, content producers, and media innovators. The Department is advancing digital media scholarship and creative technologies with a strong emphasis on industry relevance, emerging production methods, and African visual storytelling.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the following permanent academic appointment and linked fixed-term leadership role:

Professor / Associate Professor (Permanent Appointment) Minimum Requirements: Professor
  • Doctoral Degree in Film, Television or a related discipline
  • Minimum 10 years of excellent higher education experience including postgraduate supervision
  • Proven international recognition through research and creative outputs over the last 10 years
  • Demonstrated record of Masters and Doctoral supervision
  • Significant contribution to community and/or industry engagement
Minimum Requirements: Associate Professor
  • Doctoral Degree in Film, Television, or related field
  • Minimum 7 years in higher education and/or academic leadership
  • National and/or international research or creative recognition over the last 7 years
  • Successful postgraduate supervision
  • Evidence of community and/or industry-related engagement
    • Additional evidence of teaching excellence:
  • Strong discipline expertise
  • Innovative pedagogy and assessment
  • Curriculum design and development
  • Postgraduate mentorship
  • Clear teaching philosophy
  • Excellent human relations and communication skills
Head of Department: Video Technology (5-year renewable contract, in addition to the permanent academic appointment) Minimum Requirements
  • PhD in Film, Television, or relevant discipline aligned to Departmental programmes
  • Meets requirements for appointment as Associate Professor or Professor
  • At least 5 years of proven academic leadership
Key Leadership Responsibilities
  • Strategic leadership in Teaching & Learning, Research, and Community Engagement
  • Drive postgraduate growth and creative research productivity
  • Manage budgets, workloads, part-time staffing, and quality assurance
  • Strengthen industry networks, partnerships and work-integrated learning opportunities
  • Promote effective staff relations and transformation aligned to ENVISION2030
  • Advance holistic student support across all programme levels
Remuneration
  • Professor / Associate Professor: Market-related salary with benefits
  • Head of Department: R per month non-pensionable allowance (inclusive of cellphone allowance)
