Job Description

Location: Prospecton, Durban Contract type: Permanent

Ramsay Engineering would like to offer the opportunity to all employees who meet the requirements for the position that is available to apply.

Main purpose:

The Toolmaker has broad tooling related responsibilities within the Tool Maintenance Areas. This includes the responsibilities of the introduction of new tooling as well as maintaining the standards of current production tooling. The Toolmaker will be instrumental in driving the kaizen, problem solving activities and training of apprentices/learners within the plant. The toolmaker will support production and engineering with tooling and technical problems.

TQM/ Elimination of waste
  • Implement manufacturing improvements in line with delegated projects.
  • Driving the business manufacturing excellence strategy by deploying lean principles in line with agreed projects.
  • Identify, evaluate & implement improvement idea that result in tangible improvements in productivity, elimination of waste and deliver the objectives set out in the 4-pillar strategy.
  • Make Kaizen activity suggestions to improve the work environment and functionality of the equipment.
  • Improve tool reliability.
  • Participate with Manager/Team to manage A3 problem solving activity to eliminate waste & improve production within areas of control.
  • Practice and improve 5S in your work area in line with the 5S check sheet.
  • Ensure PPE is worn according to work standards.
  • All incidents must be reported within the same shift to the Manager and Safety Officer.
  • Always improve safety in the work area. Conduct all work in accordance with RMC procedures.
  • Perform all safety checks according to the safety standards.
  • Follow the SHEMS procedures.
Quality

Quality checks:

  • Conduct in process checks with attention to detail, timeously on all parts and processes throughout the shift.

Inspection:

  • Inspection of materials and parts supplied from suppliers internal and external.
  • Engage with customers and respond timeously to concerns raised by customers.li>
  • Perform root cause analysis and resolve problem.
  • Implement & uphold quality standards to reduce defects within the plant.

Measuring equipment:

  • Ensure all measuring equipment is logged on the calibration register.
  • Ensure all measuring equipment is fit for use.
  • Conduct calibration weekly of own measuring equipment.
  • Ensure equipment is calibrated annually by the quality department.
Delivery
  • Work planning/follow-up to achieve maximum efficiency in execution of task.
  • Support production with tooling and technical problems.

Work orders:

  • Plan allocated scheduled maintenance for the month.
  • Work order completion with all data fields completed, with minimum 95% compliance.

Technical:

  • Provide technical expertise to the team.
  • Technical ability in manufacturing processes, assembly and production equipment.
  • Drive & implement actions raised in line with the Total Quality Management System (TQM).

Tooling:

  • Manufacture and maintain tooling to a high level of workmanship in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Perform root cause analysis.
  • Work with designers to produce or update drawings and CAD.
  • Ensure that tools are capable of producing quality product at the defined run at rate.

Spares:

  • Manufacture/order spares timeously.
  • Maintain predetermined stock levels for all spares.
  • Return all unused spares to the stores.
  • Responsible for own personal attendance to ensure it is 98% on an ongoing basis.
People Development
  • Follow HR Policies & Procedures. Responsible for own personal development.
General
  • Analyse production performance to eliminate recurrence of continuous downtimes.
  • Tend to concerns in area of responsibility and escape according to escalation process.
  • Carry out any reasonable instructions.

Job Specification Technical skills and specialist knowledge
  • Tool Setup and Calibration: Set up and install various tools and equipment according to production requirements, including moulds, dies, fixtures, jigs, and cutting tools.
  • Tool Maintenance: Regularly inspect, clean, lubricate, and repair tools to ensure their optimal performance.
  • Mechanical functions: To design, install and maintain mechanical equipment.
  • Tool Changeovers: Assist with tool changeovers if required. Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure minimal downtime during changeover processes.
  • Tool Efficiency and Optimization: Continuously monitor tool performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Quality Control: Perform quality checks on tooling to ensure compliance with specifications and standards. Identify and address any deviations or defects that may impact product quality.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of tooling repairs, adjustments, and maintenance activities.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and regulations while working with tools and equipment. Report any safety hazards or incidents promptly. Comply with company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Training and Collaboration: Assist in training new team members on tooling procedures, safety guidelines, and best practices. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, operators, and maintenance personnel, to improve tooling processes and resolve issues.
Technical skills and specialist knowledge
  • Strong Communication Skills
  • Numeracy and English Literacy to ABET Level 4
  • Must be able to work in a team or as an individual.
  • Understanding of Disciplinary Code & Grievance Procedure
Experience
  • Experience in the Manufacturing Environment.
  • Understanding of part quality standards
Qualifications
  • Grade12
  • Computer Literacy (advantage)
