Technical Engineering Manager: Locomotives & Heavy Equipment

On behalf of our client, Engineered Sourcing is seeking a highly experienced Technical Engineering Manager to lead engineering strategy, maintenance innovation, and asset optimisation of a locomotive fleet and yellow equipment across South Africa. This is a senior leadership role reporting directly to the COO, responsible for shaping the future of engineering capability through innovation, reliability improvement, and advanced maintenance practices.

Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership: Lead technical engineering strategy for locomotives and mobile plant; provide executive level reporting and strategic input.
  • Fleet Optimisation: Drive refurbishment, repowering, and upgrade programmes to ensure maximum fleet availability, reliability, and performance.
  • Operations Management: Oversee maintenance operations across multiple sites and manage budgets, suppliers, and spare parts strategy.
  • Technical Authority: Act as the technical authority on engineering standards and design; ensure compliance with RSR, SANS, and OEM standards.
  • Innovation : Implement data-driven maintenance and reliability improvements.
  • Team Development: Lead and develop a high-performing technical team focused on safety and accountability.
Requirements
  • Education: Grade 12 with a Red Seal Artisan qualification (Diesel Electrical / Mechanical / Electrical).
  • Heavy Industry Experience: Minimum 12+ years' experience in heavy engineering, rail, or logistics.
  • Leadership Experience: Minimum 5 years of management experience in a technical environment.
  • Technical Focus: Proven experience in locomotive maintenance and strong exposure to yellow equipment / mobile plant.
  • Logistics: Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel nationally.
Advantageous Qualifications
  • National Diploma or Degree in Engineering.
  • GCC (Government Certificate of Competency).
  • Experience with engineering innovation, repowering, or alternative energy systems.
