Job Description

Leading and supervising the safe, efficient production of pentolite boosters. Ensuring compliance with explosives legislation, safety standards, and quality requirements. Managing plant personnel, equipment, and processes during a shift. Key responsibilities, Safety, Health, Environment (SHE). This is the most critical part of the role: Enforce compliance with: Explosives Act, OHS Act / Mine Health & Safety Act Conduct: Risk assessments, Toolbox talks, Safety inspections. Ensure: Safe handling, storage, movement of explosives and respond to emergencies.

Production & Process Control

Oversee mixing, casting, cooling, and finishing of boosters. Ensure: Correct TNT-PETN ratios, Temperature and mixing speed control. Adherence to batch procedures. Monitor: Production targets and equipment performance. Ensure proper: Shift start-up and shutdown procedures. Quality Assurance: Ensure boosters meet specifications is adhered to across the manufacturing process. Leadership & People Management. Supervise operators, technicians, and support staff during shift. Conduct: Shift handovers, performance monitoring and run three to four shutdowns annually. Reporting & Continuous Improvement minded.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Makes short term production decisions on Shift which would typically be referred to the Plant Manager.
  • Coordinates production between Sections to ensure smooth flow of Production on Shift.
  • Acts as a back- up to Plant Managers and the appropriate problem-solving techniques to solve issues which impact production, quality, safety and people on a Shift.
  • Carries out assignments on Shift.
  • Manages the logistics with the assistance of the Logistics Manger between the various operations within IS Manufacturing.
  • Provides on the job coaching, engineering maintenance, leadership of their Shift Teams.
  • Partakes in a training and development process, agreed with the plant Manager which prepares the incumbent for a future role of Plant Manager at AECI Mining Services, if such a job is available.
  • Ensures consistent adherence to all standards across all ISCP operations whilst on a Shift.
  • Ensures the people capacity and capability to meet current and future operational requirement.
  • Cultivates and sustains a high-performance culture.
  • Chairing of disciplinary hearings
  • Has strong personal relationships with subordinates
  • Treats team members with respect and have earned theirs in return
  • Practices legitimate leadership based on trust and sincerity
  • Consults and listens to subordinates
  • Ensures that subordinates have the authority, tools and information required to do their jobs
  • Gives his time and support to team members consistently
  • Sets clear goals and standards for subordinates
  • Ensures that all team members understand and support the business strategy and goals, and its financial results
  • Takes a strong interest in subordinates' growth and coaches them to close competency gaps
  • Has regular career discussions with team members and agrees training and development plans with each of them
  • Holds people accountable for their efforts and contribution and applies the necessary recognition and reward or discipline and censure
  • Sets and enforces high performance standards
  • Treats all subordinates fairly and does not display favouritism or prejudice
  • Provides team members with honest and regular feedback about their strengths and weaknesses
Qualifications and Experience
  • A diploma in operations or production management. Preferably, diploma in explosives management
  • Identified as having the potential to perform a Plant Manager role within a 2-3 year period
  • At least 3 years leadership experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of SHE requirements in respect of an explosives manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge of production management and manufacturing systems
  • Leadership and in particular coaching skills
  • Concern for standards
  • Initiative and proactivity
  • Be able to work in a Unionised environment
