Purpose of the PositionSenior Manager: NWU Sport provides strategic and operational leadership for competitive and campus sport on the Potchefstroom Campus, ensuring high-performance excellence, effective programme management, and sound financial control across all sporting codes. The role is responsible for the implementation of sport strategy and plan, performance management, stakeholder coordination, marketing support, student-athlete recruitment, partnership initiatives, and revenue generation to promote sustainability and growth. Through strong governance, compliance, innovation, and operational oversight, the incumbent ensures that NWU Sport remains competitive and aligns with the University's strategic objectives.
Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic and Operational Management of NWU Competitive Sport.
- Implement and execute the approved sport strategy and annual operational plans.
- Oversee the effective functioning of all competitive and campus sport codes and programmes.
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies, governance standards, and relevant sport regulations.
- Monitor performance targets and service delivery standards across sport units.
- Compile monthly and quarterly operational and performance reports.
- Ensure effective budget control, cost management, and financial reporting.
Performance and Programme Oversight
- Oversee athlete performance pathways and competitive readiness across sport codes.
- Ensure alignment of coaching structures and support services with performance objectives.
- Monitor participation trends and programme effectiveness.
- Support talent identification and structured recruitment initiatives.
- Ensure appropriate risk management, safety standards, and facility utilisation within programmes.
Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships
- Maintain effective relationships with internal stakeholders (Facilities, Student Life, Campus Management, Finance, Marketing and Student Recruitment).
- Liaise with national and regional sport bodies and relevant associations.
- Support sponsorship acquisition and partnership development initiatives.
- Contribute to marketing and brand positioning of NWU Sport.
- Represent NWU Sport in relevant operational forums and structures.
- Implement NWU Sport community development initiatives in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Financial Sustainability and Resource Management
- Develop and manage operational budgets for sport programmes and events.
- Monitor revenue streams and expenditure against approved budgets.
- Support fundraising and income-generation initiatives.
- Ensure optimal allocation and utilization of facilities, equipment, and human resources.
- Implement cost-control measures and financial best practices.
People Management and Organisational Development
- Lead and manage PC sport staff to ensure effective service delivery.
- Drive performance management, skills development, and succession planning within the unit.
- Promote a culture of accountability, inclusivity, and transformation aligned with NWU objectives.
- Oversee workforce planning and staff well-being.
- Foster teamwork, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- An honours degree (NQF Level 8) in Sport Management / Sport Science / Human Movement Science / Business Management.
- A minimum of five (5) years' management experience in a sport environment (university / high performance / structured sport environment).
- A minimum of four (4) years' experience in budget and financial management.
- A minimum of four (4) years' experience in people management and leadership of multidisciplinary teams.
- A minimum of three (3) years' operational / supervisory experience in performance sport programme oversight.
- A master's degree in (NQF Level 9) in Sport Management / Sport Science / Human Movement Science / Business Management.
- Relevant knowledge of Sport Federations.
- A minimum of three (3) years' operational experience in stakeholder engagement and partnership development.
- A minimum of three (3) years' operational experience in revenue generation / sponsorship support.
- Understanding and application of relevant legislative requirements.
- Ability to work under pressure and act in a disciplined manner.
- Organisational awareness by demonstrating knowledge of policy, procedures, and discipline.
- Fundamental knowledge of information and communication technology and systems.
- Knowledge of benchmarking and quality controls.
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
