The African Energy Chamber (AEC) is Africa's leading energy advocacy organisation, representing the full value chain of the continent's oil, gas, and energy transition sectors. Headquartered in Johannesburg and operating across the continent, the AEC brings together governments, national oil companies, international investors, and indigenous businesses to shape policy, reduce barriers to investment, and ensure that Africa's energy resources create lasting prosperity for Africans.
Through flagship publications such as the State of African Energy Outlook, the continent's premier annual energy report, and events including Africa Energy Week, the AEC sets the agenda for African energy policy and investment.
Summary of RoleThe Research & Intelligence Analyst strengthens the AEC's knowledge base and positions the Chamber as the pre-eminent thought leader on African energy markets.
You will produce rigorous, actionable intelligence that informs the AEC's policy advocacy, member services, and flagship publications, translating complex market dynamics into clear, compelling insights for governments, investors, and industry leaders across Africa and beyond.

Job Requirements- Bachelor's degree in economics, energy studies, international relations, political science, or a related field (Master's preferred)
- 4-5 years of relevant experience in energy research, policy analysis, or economic research
- Strong understanding of African energy markets and the broader geopolitical and macroeconomic context
- Excellent analytical and quantitative skills; proficiency in data tools (Excel, Power BI, or equivalent)
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English
- Demonstrated ability to synthesise complex information into accessible reports and briefs for diverse audiences
- Experience in oil & gas, renewables, LNG, or energy finance
- Working knowledge of French or any other language
- Familiarity with international energy institutions (IEA, IRENA, AfDB, World Bank, OPEC)
- Prior experience at a think-tank, consultancy, trade association, or development institution
- Published research, policy papers, or journal articles
- Conduct in-depth research on African energy markets, covering upstream and downstream oil and gas developments, energy transition trends, investment flows, fiscal regimes, and regulatory frameworks across the continent.
- Contribute to and co-author AEC flagship publications, including the annual State of African Energy Outlook, quarterly market briefs, and policy position papers.
- Monitor legislative, regulatory, and geopolitical developments affecting the African energy sector; produce timely intelligence summaries for AEC leadership, members, and external stakeholders.
- Collect, clean, and analyse quantitative and qualitative data from government, industry, and multilateral sources; translate findings into clear written reports and visual outputs.
- Provide research support for AEC advocacy positions, panel contributions, conference programming, and government submissions.
- Collaborate with external researchers, think-tanks, academic institutions, development finance organisations, and industry partners to co-produce high-quality knowledge products.
- Maintain and continuously improve the AEC's internal knowledge management systems, data libraries, and research databases.
- Support the preparation of presentations, briefing notes, speeches, and talking points for AEC leadership at high-profile events and ministerial engagements.
