Mechanical Draughtsman (Gas Fired Power Plants) Job Description

Key Role

Experienced Mechanical Draughtsman with solid experience on power plant design drawings. Bentley MicroStation, AutoCAD and Revit experience is preferable. Minimum of 5 years of experience as a draughtsman, with a focus on power plant design inclusive of site layouts, auxiliary plants (water, oil and fuel).

Effective communication with engineers and other team members is essential. Ability to identify and resolve design issues. Ability to manage multiple drawings, projects, and deadlines. Accuracy is crucial in substation overhead line designs, as errors can have significant consequences. Ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks. Familiarity with Eskom's (or similar) design standards and best practices for substations.

Responsibilities
  • Creating detailed drawings of the physical arrangement of gas-fired power plants.
  • Drafting and maintaining high-quality drawings for power plant designs.
  • Developing and maintaining SLD, schematics, overall plant sections and elevations.
  • Creating detailed drawings for plant equipment, foundation, trenches, drainage, steel structures, fencing, control building, etc.
  • Coordinate mechanical layout drawings with other disciplines (Civil, Structural, Mechanical, etc).
  • Create and modify detailed power plant drawings in MicroStation, AutoCAD, or Revit.
  • Create MicroStation seed file and master file and AutoCAD geolocated reference file.
  • Generate detailed 2D drawings and 3D models.
  • Maintain organized records of all plant drawings, ensuring proper version control and accessibility.
  • Regularly update drawings based on design changes, site modifications, and other relevant information.
  • Ensure that all drawings and documentation meet the required quality standards.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers and other team members to ensure that drawings accurately reflect the design requirements.
  • Understand and apply relevant mechanical design standards, such as IEC, IEEE and Eskom (or similar) standards when creating drawings.
  • Convert drawings into Bills of Quantities (BOQs), which are used for procurement and cost estimation.
  • Visit sites to gather information, verify dimensions, and assess the existing infrastructure.
  • Identify and resolve any discrepancies or issues that arise during the design or construction process.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior drafters or other team members.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and procedures related to mechanical work and site safety.

Qualifications

Draughting Design Certificate.

Formal proficiency in MicroStation, AutoCAD and Revit.

A Mechanical Engineering Diploma would be an added advantage.

5-7 years of power plant mechanical draughting experience.

Strong understanding of electrical and mechanical components and architectural integration.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Key Competencies and Generic Skills

Minimum 5 years of experience as a draughtsman, with a focus on gas turbine/power plant design.

Ability to work with engineers and other team members.

Strong sense of responsibility for continued learning and self-development.

Ability to work under pressure.

Must have strong organizational skills and be willing to go the extra mile to ensure deliverables are submitted on time.

Must be able to work independently and accurately with minimal supervision.
