Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in the Department of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies

Rhodes University

Job Description

The Department of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies is looking for suitably qualified candidates to join their team.

All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research), and engaging in community engagement, recognising differences in executing these responsibilities within the various departments and faculties. Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, faculty, and/or university levels.

The Requirements Lecturer
  • A PhD in any sub-discipline of linguistics. Some teaching experience and/or teaching facilitation is required. Candidates who provide evidence of having made significant progress on their PhD thesis (at least a research proposal approved) will be considered. In this case, candidates should have evidence of teaching experience.
  • An ability to teach in at least two of the sub-disciplines of linguistics currently in our curriculum or complementary to it, one of which should be formal in nature: phonology, morphology, syntax, or semantics.
  • Ability to supervise, research and teach linguistic topics on languages other than English.
  • Candidates must be able to offer a unique contribution that strengthens and complements our teaching programme. We are particularly interested in skills that expand our profile in languages beyond English, as well as growth areas in linguistics, including but not limited to quantitative, experimental, corpus linguistics, and digital humanities (as they relate to Linguistics). A research or teaching speciality in the linguistics of the following language groups would be advantageous: South African indigenous languages, Bantu languages, Khoisan languages or Sign Languages. An added advantage would be the ability to articulate a clear plan for incorporating reciprocal and sustained community engagement (not voluntarism) and/or service learning into their research and teaching.
  • Must be able to supervise postgraduate students.
  • Some evidence and experience in conducting research. Evidence of accredited published outputs would be an advantage.
  • Some record of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal)
  • Evidence of computer/data literacy skills appropriate to the current academic environment and agility in developing online content (e.g. online learning management systems, online learning platforms, shared document resources, development of video lectures, use of online forums, interactive online learning, etc.)
