WHAT IS ON OFFER

Alfred H Knight has an exciting opportunity for a Laboratory Analyst to join the wet chem department in Steelpoort. This role is responsible for carrying out analysis as per analytical methods and standard operating procedures to a high degree of precision and accuracy, ensuring that an effective and high-quality analytical service is provided to meet reporting deadlines on the various types of samples submitted to the laboratory.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND WORK EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Carrying out analytical processes from weighing, fusion, leaching, titration to instrumental analysis to a high degree of accuracy and precision as per standard method and operating procedures
  • Ensuring at all times that a high degree of accuracy and precision is applied to methods and procedures through incorporating and adhering to good laboratory practice principles at all times
  • Ensuring the organisation of daily workload to meet the agreed work schedules and targets and to ensure that all processes are performed in accordance with documented methods and procedures
  • Implementation of the ISO17025:2017 quality management system within the Laboratory sections under the guidance of the Shift Chemist
  • Carrying out first line maintenance of equipment and measuring instruments in order to identify sources of unwanted contamination and malfunctions that affect accuracy by ensuring that daily equipment checklists/verifications are completed accurately as required in respective procedures and faulty equipment being brought to the attention of the Shift Chemist
  • Maintaining records and laboratory data such that work is clearly and easily auditable and traceable
  • Diligently evaluate the quality of analytical data before handing over results to the Shift Chemist
  • Advising the Shift Chemist of repetitive technical problems relating to day-to-day analytical procedures and standard operating practices for resolution
  • Participating in audit and in-process non-conformances and customer complaints investigations and ensuring effective implementation of agreed corrective and preventative actions
  • Participating in liaison with the Laboratory Technical team in group quality initiatives, round robins, method validation and proficiency testing schemes
  • Advising the Shift Chemist on problems that may affect results production and turnaround times
  • Performing instrument calibrations and routinely performing instrument checks and recording all relevant data
  • Ensuring the confidentiality of all results at all times
  • Participating in production/toolbox meetings to ensure that the post holder is well informed on of set production targets
  • Ensuring that excellent housekeeping is maintained at all times within the laboratory Sections and that samples are stored correctly at all times and are easily retrievable when required
  • Monitoring of stock levels to ensure all critical chemicals, consumables and equipment spares for ICP-OES are readily available and minimum quantities are kept in stock to avoid shortages which can cause delays in routine analysis
  • Ensuring that the Company's Health & Safety policy is applied effectively
Required Competencies
  • Good knowledge and understanding of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 requirements.
  • High computer literacy, including high level presentations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Handles pressure and ambiguity well, exercises good judgment and handles challenges in a mature manner.
  • Ability to manage own time effectively, whilst working to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and under pressure.
  • Orchestrate multiple activities at once to accomplish a goal
  • Effective team working and interpersonal skills
  • Good attention to detail

Required Qualifications
  • Grade 12 (with Maths and Science)
  • Analytical Chemistry Degree / Diploma
Required work experience
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a production analytical chemistry laboratory with good understanding of sample preparation, classical wet chemistry, ICP-OES and ISO17025 system implementation
