INFRASTRUCTURE & FACILITIES PROJECT MANAGER
(24-MONTH PERFORMANCE-BASED CONTRACT, RENEWABLE FOR A FURTHER YEAR BASED ON PERFORMANCE)
The KwaZulu-Natal Museum is seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead and deliver a large-scale project and provide other facilities management duties. The successful candidate will be responsible for end-to-end project management, stakeholder coordination, risk control, and ensuring delivery within scope, time, budget, and quality standards. This is a senior-level position requiring strong technical understanding, financial management capability, and demonstrated leadership in complex, multi-stakeholder environments.
Responsibilities Project Planning & Delivery- Lead the full project lifecycle-from initiation and planning to execution, monitoring, and closure.
- Develop and maintain the Project Management Plan (PMP), scope documents, schedules, and budgets.
- Monitor performance against KPIs, milestones, cost forecasts, and contractual obligations.
- Manage a budget of R500 million with strong cost control, forecasting, and financial reporting.
- Oversee procurement processes, tender evaluations, contract negotiations, and supplier performance.
- Ensure compliance with PFMA, all other applicable regulations, and internal governance.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks, issues, and dependencies.
- Ensure regulatory compliance with South African laws, industry standards, and environmental requirements.
- Implement quality assurance and control frameworks to meet technical specifications.
- Coordinate cross-functional teams, contractors, consultants, and vendors.
- Chair project steering committee meetings and provide senior-level reporting.
- Manage relationships with government bodies, community stakeholders, investors, and regulatory authorities.
- Ensure effective communication and change management across all project phases.
- Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly progress reports for executives and stakeholders.
- Maintain project documentation and lead audits, evaluations, and close-out processes.
- Bachelor's degree in Project Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or related field.
- Professional certification: PMP, PRINCE2 Practitioner, PMA, or equivalent (mandatory).
- 10+ years' project management experience, with at least 5 years managing large-scale projects valued above R200 million up to completion.
- Demonstrated experience with government, infrastructure, construction, or similar high-value capital projects.
- Strong knowledge of South African legislative frameworks, procurement systems, and industry standards.
- Proven leadership skills and ability to manage large, multidisciplinary teams.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Project / Primavera / equivalent tools.
- Experience managing large heritage construction projects will serve as an added advantage.
- Honours or Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Experience in mega-projects (R500m+ to multi-billion).
- Experience working in complex political, social, or regulated environments.
- Strong negotiation, stakeholder management, and contract administration skills.
