Job Purpose

The purpose of an Industrial Engineer is to analyse operations, design workflows and production processes that reduce inefficiency, and ensuring that final products meet the established quality standards.

Job Performance Criteria
  • Operational
    • Reviewing production schedules, processes, specifications, and related information to obtain knowledge of manufacturing methods, procedures, and activities.
    • Designing production processes that maximize efficiency and reduce waste.
    • Developing and implementing process improvements and technological upgrades.
    • Designing control systems to minimize costs and production issues.
    • Design efficient operational layouts to minimize travel time and improve inventory management.
    • Optimize transportation routes to reduce fuel consumption, delivery time, and costs.
  • Quality Control
    • Evaluate precision and accuracy of production and testing equipment and engineering drawings to formulate corrective action plan.
    • Analyse statistical data and product specifications to determine standards and establish quality and reliability objectives of finished product.
  • Personnel Management
    • Assess operations sequence, material flow, functional statements, organization charts, and project information to determine worker functions and responsibilities.
    • Training staff for new processes and providing instructions and manuals.
    • Direct workers engaged in product measurement, inspection, and testing activities to ensure quality control and reliability.
  • Data Management
    • Formulate sampling procedures and designs and develop forms and instructions for recording, evaluating, and reporting quality and reliability data.
    • Record or oversee recording of information to ensure currency of engineering drawings and documentation of production problems.
  • Vendor Management
    • Complete purchase orders, and material, tool, and equipment lists.
    • Schedule deliveries based on production forecasts, material substitutions, storage and handling facilities, and maintenance requirements.
    • Regulate and alter workflow schedules according to established manufacturing sequences and lead times to expedite production operations.
  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting
    • Develop KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) to track logistics performance (e.g., order accuracy, on-time delivery).
    • Use simulation and predictive modeling to test different logistics strategies before implementation.
    • Managing process documentation and preparing operational reports.
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of production processes, costs, quality control, raw materials, and other methods for maximizing the efficient manufacture and distribution of goods.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the ways various systems interact and how changes in operations, the environment and other conditions will affect outcomes.

Qualifications and experience requirements
  • BSc Engineering or BEng (Industrial)
  • Certifications - ECSA Candidate Engineer
  • 0 - 2 years' experience or related business experience
