Main job function

A new role and an outstanding opportunity for a driven, visionary operations professional to play a key role within this global speciality company. Reporting to the Managing Director in South Africa, the GM Operations is responsible for leading and directing the operations departments and teams, implementing key initiatives in line with Global and Local company Strategies to achieve sustainable growth in sales, profitability and cash flow.

Responsibilities include: Leadership
  • Planning, sourcing and providing strong and effective leadership to department managers to ensure that the organization's strategic objectives are achieved.
  • Working closely with the Managing Director and General Manager - Sales to devise strategies for achieving the organization's objectives in consideration of both internal and external factors.
  • Drive the execution of the Strategy while ensuring alignment with the global directives.
Management of support departments
  • Driving the execution of the Strategy while ensuring alignment with the global directives
  • Managing company assets, procedures and processes to ensure on going improvement in profitability and cash flow.
  • Providing regular updates to the Managing Director/representative stakeholders on the status of execution of strategy and projects.
Corporate Governance
  • Establishing appropriate management control and reporting systems in all departments.
  • Assuring compliance of all operations practices with local and corporate statutory regulations and standards.
  • Developing and maintaining a Risk Management Framework
  • Leading and driving Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBB-EE) compliance.
SHE Management
  • Executing SHE policies & procedures and ensuring compliance
  • Ensuring compliance with OHS Act (S16.2)
  • Ensure contractors comply with OHS Act S37;
  • Ensuring compliance to ISO systems (9001:2015, 14001:2015, 45001:2018);
  • Ensuring compliance with SHERQ corporate training requirements;
People Management
  • Leading, directing and managing the Operations team by;
  • Establishing optimum departmental structures;
  • Ensuring effective Succession Planning;
  • Ensuring fair industrial relations practices;
  • Coaching and mentoring direct reports;
  • Fostering a culture of teamwork and collaboration;
Qualifications
  • Minimum 4-year Degree
  • Chemical manufacturing/Engineering background
  • Post-graduate qualification (Business Studies) or equivalent
Criteria
  • 10 Years business experience, 5 of which at senior management level
  • Good knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
  • Advanced business process knowledge
  • Good understanding of financial management principles/P&L leadership
  • Advanced strategy development skills
  • Advanced Problem solving skills
  • Strategic decision making skills
  • Advanced Negotiation skills
  • Communication and influencing skills

Strong evidence of internal and external stakeholder management ability - build effective relationships with managers, project team leaders and global teams, suppliers, distributors and government departments.
