Job responsibilities The main purpose is to support the Department and the Trust in maintaining a high quality service and to improve and maintain the RTT standards.
The Urology department is well established at George Eliot Hospital with 4 consultant surgeons providing high quality service and is supported by 2 senior specialists, 2 middle grade staff and CNS expertise.Currently our service covers all aspects of urology except radical pelvic surgery. We are in the process of creating a pan Warwickshire and Coventry urology network and there may be an opportunity for the appointee to undertake sessional work in an adjacent Trust.
George Eliot has a state of the art and widely regarded endoscopy unit. We have state of the art laser equipment a 120 W and also a 70 W laser. The 120 W laser is used for elective work, whilst the 70 W laser is used for emergency stone surgery. We have a visiting ESWL service.
This is great opportunity to play a part in expanding a department which is close knit and on a single site. Special interests will be supported subject to agreement. Examples of those available include:
The successful candidate will be expected to take a full share of the emergency call rota and be able to manage the core urology emergencies.
Newly appointed consultants will benefit from a mentorship programme to ensure there is full support on commencement in post.
The Trust has recently introduced a Consultant Foundation Programme led by internal and external mentors, with the following aims:
The SARD JV web-based electronic medical appraisal system is embedded across theTrust and includes the GMC and Royal College requisite components for revalidation.
The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities as detailed in agreed Personal Development Plans (PDPS).

Main duties of the job
- Applications are invited for a Consultant Urologist to join a dynamic forward thinking and supportive uro-surgical unit. We expect the successful candidate to have exceptional rounded skills in Urology and would support an additional skill or interest.
- This post is a general job with a range of opportunities in urological practice. There is an on-call rota which is not onerous. The department has middle grade and junior medical staff and CNS support.
- Job Description to be agreed and can be adapted to suit the Trust and the appointee.

- Diagnostics and oncological surgery which includes renal laparoscopic surgery and MRI -TRUS fusion prostate biopsy service.
- Functional Urology including Video Urodynamics and Botox
- Clinical Informatics / Digital Health
The successful candidate will be expected to take a full share of the emergency call rota and be able to manage the core urology emergencies.
Newly appointed consultants will benefit from a mentorship programme to ensure there is full support on commencement in post.

Principal duties of this post include:
- Take on-going responsibility for patients under his/her care.
- Provide a consultation service and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and Primary Care.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other post graduate activities.
- Develop and maintain good communications with General practitioners and appropriate external agencies.
- Participate in the development of the care of patients arriving as emergencies. The on call rota is 1:4 weekdays and weekends covering urological emergencies. Currently, consultants are on call one week at a time. Plans are in discussion to provide dedicated time for the on call consultant to address emergencies. The on call rota has a registrar on call one day a week, SHO on full shift pattern and FY1 until 9pm from the general surgery on call team. Designated emergency theatre is available to operate emergencies.
- Participate and encourage two way communications encompassing briefing systems as appropriate.
- Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.
- Ensure that all trust wide standards are maintained to improve the quality of total care to all who come in contact with services provided by GEH.
- Ensure compliance with all appropriate legal and statutory requirements, including Health and Safety, Standing financial Instructions and Incident Reporting.
- Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers
- Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit this will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice.
- Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors and other staff within the specialty. This will include the appraisal of doctors in training, and the Certificates of Satisfaction in respect of foundation year doctors.
- Ensure own practice is up-to-date which will include taking responsibility for own Continuous Professional Development and participating in the Trusts Performance and Annual Review system.
- Participate in the continuing professional development scheme of an appropriate medical college and the Trust & University Joint Appraisal scheme. The Trust supports the requirements for Continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Person Specification Qualifications and Professional Training
- Full GMC registration with a license to practice and eligible for Entry on the Specialist Register in Urology. CCT / Portfolio Pathway date must be within 6 months of interview
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Urology.
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
- Expertise in cross sectional imaging where specified
- Thorough and detailed knowledge of medical audit, medical education, current clinical and medical best practice
- Understanding of the Clinical Governance process
- Experience of service development
- Knowledge of sub-specialty interests in Urology
- Knowledge of Digital Health / Clinical Informatics
- Ability to lead, communicate, liaise and negotiate with others
- Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
- Ability to motivate, innovate and support staff of all disciplines
- Ability to manage and lead clinical team
- Ability to supervise, appraise, coach and mentor trainee and other doctors
