The Registered Nurse (RN), as shift leader, plays a pivotal role in managing the nursing team to ensure that each patient is treated with dignity and respect at all times. The RN ensures that the patient is in a safe environment and that their individual needs are addressed, thereby delivering high quality mental health care and physical health care to patients within Akeso Clinics. The RN has knowledge and skills to confidently role-model a high standard of nursing practice at all times. The position description is a broad indication of the work required from individual personnel holding a particular position. The Registered Nurse will be responsible for assisting with improved quality nursing care by ensuring compliance to professional and ethical practice, Nursing act, 2005 (Act No. 33 of 2005), all Health Care legislation, Basic Conditions of Employment, Policies and Procedures and Core Standards. The Registered Nurse will also be responsible for assisting with monitoring and ensuring that nursing care and service delivery is implemented and practised within a multi-disciplinary quality assurance team. The incumbent also fulfils the role by the use of scientifically-based nursing theories and processes, treating the patients as a physical, social and spiritual individual, and by use of educational and technical means applicable to health care practice.Job Summary The Akeso Registered Nurse at Netcare Hospitals (Pty) Limited provides specialized mental health and psychiatric nursing care to patients within an Akeso facility, ensuring a therapeutic environment and contributing to the overall well-being and recovery of individuals. Job Responsibilities Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans for patients with various mental health conditions, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders. Administer medication safely and accurately, monitoring for efficacy and side effects, and educating patients and families on medication regimens. Conduct regular patient observations and assessments, documenting changes in mental status, behavior, and physical health. Facilitate individual and group therapy sessions, providing support, psychoeducation, and therapeutic interventions under the guidance of a psychiatrist or psychologist. Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals, to ensure holistic patient care. Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records, adhering to Netcare's policies and procedures and legal requirements. Respond to and manage psychiatric emergencies and crises, utilizing de-escalation techniques and appropriate interventions. Educate patients and their families about mental health conditions, treatment options, coping strategies, and relapse prevention. Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff, adhering to infection control protocols and safety standards. Participate in continuous professional development and training to stay current with best practices in mental health nursing. Job Qualifications Valid registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered Nurse. Post-basic qualification in Psychiatric Nursing Science is highly advantageous. Minimum of 2-3 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, preferably within a mental health or psychiatric setting. Demonstrated knowledge of mental health conditions, psychopharmacology, and therapeutic interventions. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and empathy skills. Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team. Strong crisis management and de-escalation skills. Commitment to ethical practice and patient confidentiality. Proficiency in computer skills for electronic patient record management.
