Purpose of Role:The Primary Aftercare Assistant is responsible for overseeing the safety, academic progress, and social development of primary-aged students. This role focuses on providing a balance between homework support, constructive outdoor play, and fostering independence in a nurturing setting.
Key Responsibilities:- Academic Support: Supervise and assist learners with homework and projects, ensuring they understand their tasks while encouraging independent problem-solving.
- Holistic Well-being: Ensure a seamless transition from the formal school day to afternoon care, including managing healthy snack routines and rest periods.
- Structured Recreation: Facilitate age-appropriate games, sports, and creative activities that promote team-building and social-emotional growth.
- Safety & Supervision: Maintain strict supervision of all learners, ensuring the playground and classrooms remain hazard-free zones.
- Parent Partnership: Provide professional and clear feedback to parents regarding their child's afternoon, specifically focusing on homework completion and social interactions.
- Conflict Resolution: Guide older children through social challenges, helping them develop resilience and effective communication skills.
- Physical Requirement Note: This role requires high energy. You will be expected to be active on the playground, supervise sports activities, move between classrooms, and remain on your feet for significant periods.
- Education: Relevant qualification in Early Childhood Development (ECD) or Foundation Phase Education (NQF Level 4, 5, or 6 preferred).
- Experience: 2-4 years of experience working with primary school children (Ages 6-13).
- Certifications: Current First Aid & CPR certification (Level 1 or higher) is a significant advantage.
- Security: Clear criminal record and SACE registration (if applicable) are essential.
- Skills: Strong command of English (written and verbal) to assist with academic work.
- Patient & Firm: The ability to maintain discipline with kindness and consistency.
- Mentor Mindset: A passion for guiding older children through their academic and social milestones.
- Organised: Able to manage a group of students with varying homework needs and energy levels.
- Proactive: Someone who identifies opportunities for fun and learning without needing constant direction.
