Rydberg Technologies is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Photonics Engineer to lead the design, development, and integration of advanced lasers and photonic systems for next-generation atomic quantum technologies. This hands-on engineering role is ideal for a candidate passionate about photonics innovation and ready to work at the intersection of physics, optics, and system integration. Key Responsibilities: • Prototype Development Lead the end-to-end design, simulation, and development of integrated photonic systems and laser subsystems, including waveguides, microrings, couplers, Sagnac mirrors, Bragg structures, and tapers. • Simulation & Modeling Perform device-level and system-level simulations using Lumerical MODE, FDTD, INTERCONNECT, HEAT/DEVICE, and GDSFactory. Conduct thermo-optic and electro-optic analysis and verification. • Tapeout & Fabrication Drive tapeout processes with commercial silicon photonics foundries. Manage GDSII layout preparation and validation using PDKs and oversee fabrication runs. • System Integration Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and thermal engineers to integrate photonic systems into complete atomic and quantum platforms. Ensure stable packaging, alignment, and optical performance. • Characterization & Testing Design and execute optical test procedures. Use MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, and other tools for real-time data acquisition, analysis, and iterative design refinement. • Research & Innovation Monitor advances in PIC technologies, frequency stabilization, and heterogeneously integrated lasers. Drive internal innovation and contribute to strategic R&D planning. • Documentation & Reporting Produce clear and thorough documentation including design specs, simulation reports, testing results, and fabrication protocols. • Mentorship & Leadership Mentor junior engineers and support technicians. Required Qualifications: • Master’s or Ph.D. in Photonics, Optics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. • Extensive hands-on experience with narrow-linewidth laser development and photonic system integration. • Proficient in Ansys Lumerical, GDSFactory, MATLAB, Python, and SolidWorks. • Demonstrated experience with PIC design, layout, and foundry tapeouts (SiN, SOI, etc.). • Expertise in laser stabilization, diode/fiber coupling, bonding/alignment, and integrated thermal-mechanical design. • Familiarity with PDK-based workflows and semiconductor fabrication. • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency may be required. Project/Unit Description The Photonics and Microelectronics Division (PMD) in the Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory (EOSL) of GTRI is searching for an early to mid-career Photonics/RFIC Engineer, with emphasis on experience in designing, taping out, and testing analog, mixed signal, and/or digital RF integrated circuits (ICs); this can include focus in device physics, TCAD modeling, reliability and advanced measurements of RF ICs. This position is specifically not focused on photonic IC design, though frequent collaboration between photonic and RF IC designers is expected. The Photonics and Microelectronics Division has a dual mission in the topical areas of 1) design, prototyping & packaging of innovative DoD microsystems using digital / RF / photonic ICs, as well as 2) physical analysis of integrated circuits and their ability to perform in mission environments. The PMD team is skilled in design, simulation, fabrication, packaging and measurement of: RF and photonic ICs and subsystems; fiber optics; processing RF signals in the optical domain; fiber communications; building optical and RF systems/subsystems with discrete components and ICs; and materials physics, reliability, and forensics analysis of III-V & CMOS devices. Job Purpose A Photonics Engineer advances and matures the state-of-the-art in integrated circuits that interact with electromagnetic signals. Their research centers on the development of RFICs and/or photonic IC (PICs) technology enabled through a diverse set of material systems, including Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS)-based silicon, silicon germanium (SiGe), and compound semiconductors (InP, GaAs, GaN and their associated ternary and quaternary compositions). The engineer is versed in the design and development of electronic, radio frequency, millimeter wave, and photonics design and development. Technology breakthroughs are achieved through a broad skill set covering numerous stages of the fabrication process including simulation, design, layout, packaging, and characterization of ICs, as well as integration into higher-level systems (such as board-level, component-level, and systems-level). The engineer works as part of a broad team of researchers to innovate new concepts, identify technology stakeholders, and execute challenging research in the national interest.
