We are seeking a Naval Architect to support our Washington, DC office. Candidate will analyze ship hulls and superstructures, lead multidisciplinary teams in proto@type development, and evaluate vessel performance during trials. Responsibilities include ensuring designs meet national and international standards for Navy shipbuilding programs.
What will you do?
Provide analysis on ship hulls and superstructures, study design products and specifications to establish basic characteristics of a ship, such as size, weight, and speed, lead teams from a variety of specialties to oversee building and testing proto@types, evaluate how ships perform during trials, both at dock and at sea, and change designs as needed to make sure national and international standards are met.

Pay Range: VTG's estimated starting pay range is $85,000-$150,000 annually, which is a general guideline for the geographic location. Job Description:

You’ll Bring These Qualifications:
- BSME in Marine Engineering
- Hands-on experience working with ship machinery and systems
- Ability to write concise reports and specifications in English with minimal oversight in MS Word making use of features such as styles, fields, and references.
- Proven track record in ship design, modification, or maintenance projects
- Ability to interface with team members, technical leads, and Project Managers
- Ability to review and apply US Navy and/or US commercial ship design requirements, including DOD acquisition, system safety, and testing processes
- Proficiency in MS Excel and Powerpoint
- Ability to work alone on individual projects with minimal supervision and with other Engineering Disciplines on a team.

- Conduct risk assessments and develop risk reduction strategies for shipboard systems, with emphasis on propulsion, power generation, and mission-critical equipment.
- Provide technical support for in-service vessels throughout their lifecycle, leveraging past industrial and operational experience to solve complex engineering challenges

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated subject matter expert-level Naval Architect with a focus on Structures to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC. An ideal candidate will have significant prior experience with designing structural and strength components for shipboard use, experience with marine structural codes, and development and use of structural analysis calculations in U.S. Federal or commercial shipbuilding environments.
Typical Responsibilities:

Position Summary
The Naval Architect - Marine Engineer has mastery and advanced knowledge of related engineering fields. The Naval Architect - Marine Engineer independently directs and technically manages engineering and design activities under the guidance of a Project Manager and is responsible for tracking progress and technical adequacy of the design solution. The Naval Architect - Marine Engineer interacts with all OTECH departments as necessary to provide engineering support to OTECH manufacturing, integration, and test activities, and provides work leadership for lower level employees. The industrial equivalent of the Naval Architect is a Level 4.
This role will be based out of our Hanover, MD office and could be remote or hybrid remote until return to office from the pandemic.
Duties & Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL
• Develop and apply advanced engineering analytical and design methods, theories and research techniques, to complex engineering projects, culminating in practical, manufacturable, and serviceable designs
• Lead and/or execute work ranging from working alone, working as part of a group, or working remotely, with minimal supervision.
• Coordinate and supervise an interdisciplinary design team of engineers, designers, drafters, technical writers, and technicians.
• Review progress and evaluate results of work accomplished by self and others.
• Technically manage projects of moderate scope.
• Estimate resource requirements to meet technical and scheduling objectives.

Responsibilities
• Perform design reviews and evaluate constructability. Independently performs work that requires conventional engineering but may also perform more complex engineering work with higher-level technical supervision. Conduct technical evaluations of structural analysis and load calculations to ensure sound design and compliance meeting requirements.
• Plans, schedules, conducts, or coordinates detailed phases of the engineering work in a part of a major project or in a total project of moderate scope.
• Performs work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features such as conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, and difficult coordination requirements.
• Design and prepare engineering reports and related documentation, and devise charts and graphs to record results.
• Utilize computers, including the Microsoft Office Suite for reviewing and compiling information for data entry and transferring files and electronic/digital scans. Experience in maintaining, organizing, tracking the status, and prioritizing engineering documents (both physical and electronic records).
• Resolve technical issues and manage information generated through the design and construction phases of multiple and concurrent projects. Work requires a broad knowledge of precedents in the specialty area and a good knowledge of and practices of related specialties carried out by others.
• Work closely with junior and senior engineers to create vessel and vessel system designs and research compliance specifications and technical design issues, including, but not limited to, ship’s structures, hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, stability, and seakeeping, to report findings and to recommend possible solutions.
• Interface with classification societies and USCG to attain and maintain class and load line certificates for various types of barges and other vessels in the marine construction fleet.
• Manage weight control during vessel modifications and perform deadweight surveys and inclining experiments when required
• Survey existing vessels to determine scope of repair and maintenance activities
• Perform and/or oversee vessel hull structure design for hull repair, modification, new or increased equipment loading, and new construction
• Analyze vessel stability for cargo, construction machinery loading, and crane operations; develop load capacity charts for derrick barge cranes and mobile cranes on barges
• Provide engineering support for hull outfitting and marine equipment, including cranes and other material handling equipment, winches, mooring systems, electrical and hydraulic powering systems, piping and ventilation, etc.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or related field is required.
• Marine background and experience is required.
• Professional Engineer licensure or eligibility within the United States
• 8+ years of marine/naval engineering experience preferred.
• Ability to analyze and interpret hydraulic, electrical, mechanical, system control logic, and other technical drawings, industry journals, documents & regulations such as ABS, Lloyds, DNV, USCG etc.
• Experience working directly with Class and USCG to ensure vessel compliance with regulatory requirements
• Knowledge and aptitude for structural, mechanical and electrical products in marine systems is required.
• Strong all-around academic knowledge of structural engineering
• Experience with engineering design software will be an advantage; this includes AutoCAD, BlueBeam, MathCAD, Navisworks, RISA-3D, MOSES, etc.

This Naval Architect will design, build, and maintain Unmanned Systems (UxSs) in PMS 406's portfolio.
