Position Details
General Description
The Log Scaler/ Loader Operator shall adopt the culture, standards, values and working environment as outlined by the Procurement Manager and the entire executive management team. The Log Scaler/ Loader Operator is responsible for accurately and efficiently scaling all logs in accordance with the Kennebec Lumber Co. standards, keeping accurate inventory control, providing excellent customer service to all customers and vendors while maintaining a high level of confidentiality. In addition, this position will service incoming and outgoing trucks, and assist in maintenance of the grounds, log row organization and the daily care of the equipment.
Responsibilities
• Identify log species
• Accurately mark and understand log grade marks
• Accurately read and proficiently understand KLC spec sheet
• Accurately measure length and diameter of a log
• Accurately read scale rule
• Determine any deductions/defects of a log
• Efficiently operate and input log data into handheld device
• Download handheld device daily
• Manage inventory of logs
• Manage Pile Sorting of logs correctly according to species and grade
• Maintain solid ongoing communication with Log Loader operators to facilitate smooth operation of yard activities
• Keep Workspace Organized and clean – inclusive of equipment cabs
• Obtain any supplies through proper channels and SOP
• Demonstrate exemplary customer service to customers, vendors, and all site visitors at all times
• Assist with all truck loads – incoming and outgoing
• Maintain Grounds, Log row organization and accuracy
• Accurate documentation of all loads
• Fueling equipment at end of every shift
• Daily Inspection Sheet completion
• Greasing machines and Preventative Maintenance items and documentation
• Maintain effective communication regarding inventory, stain, other log related issues with effective personnel.
• Participate in the snow removal process as directed by Management
• Housekeeping
• Pick up after yourself
• Participate in the department housekeeping program
• Work area must be kept clean at all times
• Read and write proficiently
• Excellent hand / eye coordination
• Attention to detail
• Good depth perception
• Good organizational skills
• Additional trainings as required
• Travel as needed
• All other duties as Assigned
Safety
• PPE: Hard hat in all areas of the Log Yard, Florescent vests required for all yard activity, Eye Protection, Hearing Protection near all running equipment
• Steel/Safety Toed footwear required in all areas
• Hear Protection required in all areas near running equipment
• Exception being – inside cab of outside machine forklifts
• Report all near misses and unsafe acts
• Pedestrian awareness at all times in the area
• Follow KLC employee handbook policies & procedures
Physical Requirements
• Ability to work in all weather conditions (below 0 temps to over 90º)
• Standing/Walking for long periods of time on adverse terrain
Radio communication & acknowledgment
• Use professionalism at all times
• Answer all calls in a timely manner

The Baillie Group's Smyrna, NY sawmill is hiring for a hardwood log scaler / equipment operator. This is a great opportunity for an individual with prior scaling and/or log grading experience and experience operating heavy equipment. This person would be identifying log type, grade and scaling logs, as well as operating equipment. This is a full-time opportunity working for a world class hardwood lumber manufacturer.
Hardwood Log Scaler/Equipment Operator Responsibilities:
1. Identify log types
2. Grade and scale logs
3. Operate heavy equipment and other equipment as needed
4. Work safely and help maintain a safe work environment
Hardwood Log Scaler/Equipment Operator Qualifications:
1. Minimum of one (1) year experience scaling logs
2. Heavy equipment operation experience - specifically front end loader
3. Experience and ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with a focus on safety and quality
Hardwood Log Scaler/Equipment Operator Pay & Benefits:
1. Anticipated Minimum - Anticipated Maximum Pay - $18 - $23/hour*
