The Department of Magistrate Services is accepting applications for the position of Chief Magistrate for the 13th Judicial District in the Sixth Magisterial Region. A Chief Magistrate is an independent judicial officer appointed by the Executive Secretary of the Supreme Court of Virginia with management responsibility to ensure appropriate delivery of judicial services in a judicial district. This position ensures appropriate delivery of services to the City of Richmond. The Chief Magistrate supervises magistrates and maintains relationships with judges, clerks of court, and other local government officials to ensure efficient functioning of the magistrate system. Although the primary location for this position is the City of Richmond, a Chief Magistrate is appointed to a region and may also assist with magistrate service duties anywhere in the region. Region 6 includes Caroline, Charles City, Essex, Gloucester, Hanover, Henrico, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Mathews, Middlesex, New Kent, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, and York Counties and the Cities of Richmond, Poquoson, Fredericksburg, and Williamsburg. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• exercising the powers enumerated in Virginia Code §§ 19.2-36 and 19.2-45;
• recruiting, training, supervising and evaluating the magistrates within the district;
• implementing and applying policies for the magistrates within the district;
• addressing and resolving conflicts and complaints;
• developing and maintaining good relationships with magistrates and other chief magistrates within the region;
• developing and maintaining good relationships with OES departments, courts, and other local agencies;
• completing special projects assigned by the Magistrate Regional Supervisor;
• reviewing and responding to correspondence, emails, and telephone inquiries; and
• supporting the Department of Magistrate Services and the Office of the Executive Secretary.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate must be a citizen of the United States, possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education, and either be or become a resident of Virginia prior to appointment. The successful candidate must be a member in good standing of the Virginia State Bar. Management or supervisory experience is required. Extensive knowledge of the Virginia judicial system, including criminal law and procedure, is required. Excellent analytical, decision making, and communication skills (written and verbal) are required. The successful candidate must maintain a flexible work schedule and be willing to be on-call at all times.

Description: The President shall nominate, from the list of persons recommended by the District of Columbia Judicial Nomination Commission, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, appoint all judges of the District of Columbia courts
Membership: There is established for the District of Columbia the District of Columbia Judicial Nomination Commission (hereafter in this section referred to as the "Commission"). The Commission shall consist of seven members selected in accordance with the provisions of subsection (b). Such members shall serve for terms of six years, except that the member selected in accordance with subsection (b)(4)(A) shall serve for five years; of the members first selected in accordance with subsection (b)(4)(B), one member shall serve for three years and one member shall serve for six years; of the members first selected in accordance with subsection (b)(4)(C), one member shall serve for a term of three years and one member shall serve for five years; the member first selected in accordance with subsection (b)(4)(D) shall serve for six years; and the member first appointed in accordance with subsection (b)(4)(E) shall serve for six years. In making the respective first appointments according to subsections (b)(4)(B) and (b)(4)(C), the Mayor and the Board of Governors of the unified District of Columbia Bar shall designate, at the time of such appointments, which member shall serve for the shorter term and which member shall serve for the longer term. (A) One member shall be appointed by the President of the United States. NOTICE FOR APPOINTMENT OF MAGISTRATE JUDGE
Due to the planned retirement of Magistrate Judge Michael T. Parker on November 2, 2026, and with the approval of both the Fifth Circuit Judicial Council and the Committee on the Administration of the Magistrate Judges System of the Judicial Conference of the United States to fill the vacancy, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi is receiving applications for the position of Magistrate Judge assigned to the District’s Eastern Division in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The duty station for this position is the William M. Colmer Federal Building and United States Courthouse in Hattiesburg, and the successful candidate must reside in, or relocate to, the Hattiesburg metropolitan area. The appointment will be effective upon the successful candidate’s acceptable completion of the required FBI background investigation but no earlier than November 3, 2026.
The duties of the position are demanding and wide-ranging. The magistrate judge conducts most preliminary proceedings in criminal cases; conducts trials and dispositions of misdemeanor cases; conducts various pretrial matters and evidentiary proceedings on delegation from a district judge; conducts settlement conferences; and conducts trials of civil cases upon consent of the litigants. The basic authority of a United States Magistrate Judge is specified in 28 U.S.C. §636.
To be qualified for appointment an applicant must
(1) Be, and have been for at least five years, a member in good standing of the bar of the highest court of a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Territory of Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, or the Virgin Islands of the United States;
(2) Have been engaged in the active practice of law for a period of at least 5 years (with some substitutes authorized);
(3) Be competent to perform all duties of the office; be of good moral character; be emotionally stable and mature; be committed to equal justice under the law; be in good health; be patient and courteous; and be capable of deliberation and decisiveness;
(4) Be less than seventy years old; and
(5) Not be related to a judge of the district court.
A merit selection panel composed of attorneys and other members of the community will review all applicants and recommend to the district judges in confidence the five persons it considers best qualified. The court will make the appointment following an FBI full-field investigation and an IRS tax check of the applicant selected by the court for appointment. An affirmative effort will be made to give due consideration to all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, age (40 and over), gender, religion, national origin or disability. The individual selected must comply with the financial disclosure requirements pursuant to the Ethics in Government Act of 1978, Pub. L. REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Manage and monitor the Magistrate Judge’s caseload, court calendars, and accuracy of statistical and pending reports.
• Review and track all MJDAP cases. Monitor and manage all opt-out activity, including deadline tracking, maintaining confidentiality, and coordinating reassignment procedures as needed.
• Attend court proceedings, call court to order, administer oaths and swear in witnesses.
• Assist with the orderly flow of proceedings that include, but is not limited to, setting up the courtroom, conducting and troubleshooting court hearings by video and telephone, using platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, CourtSmart and other telephonic technology, assuring presence of all necessary parties, and assist with the selection of juries and managing exhibits.
• Compose substance of minute orders; prepare verdict forms, judgments and other court forms.
• Performs duties associated with criminal bench and document duty including but not limited to, preparing bonds and release orders, reviewing bonds and supporting documents to ensure bond conditions have been satisfied, processing search warrants and other filings submitted to the court.
• Participate in the arraignment of defendants and provide other courtroom assistance, as necessary.
• Reviews the quality of electronic filings made by outside users, ensuring that entries are appropriately and accurately docketed, and take other appropriate corrective action as needed.
• Makes summary entries of documents and proceedings on the docket. Prepares and transmits to appropriate parties such items as: notices, judgments and orders.
• Acts as a liaison between the judge and other Clerk’s Office staff, Probation and Pretrial Services, the bar, the United States Marshal Service, the United States Attorney’s Office, the Federal Public Defender’s Office, other government agencies, and pro se litigantsto ensure that cases proceed smoothly and efficiently.
• Provide relief coverage, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:
• Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. A college degree is strongly preferred. Paralegal experience is highly desirable.
• Must have at least one-year equivalent experience at the CL-25 level. Courtroom Deputy experience is highly desirable.
• The position requires excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
• A Magistrate Judge Courtroom Deputy must be able to communicate thoughts with confidence, clarity, conciseness, and tact. The position requires excellent English verbal and written skills including grammar, spelling and punctuation.
• A minimum of three years of progressively responsible office administrative experience, including the use of legal terminology, and the application of a body of rules, regulations, directions or laws to various situations.
• Skill in the use of computers and various computer programs such as Microsoft Office products is required.
• The Magistrate Judge Courtroom Deputy must demonstrate an acute attention to detail, be well-organized, and have exceptional time management skills.
• The Magistrate Judge Courtroom Deputy must demonstrate an ability to thoroughly research and solve problems and work effectively in a fast-paced atmosphere dealing with numerous and diverse legal issues.
• The Magistrate Judge Courtroom Deputy must possess strong leadership and organizational skills and have the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and think logically under large workloads and time constraints.
• Because of the criticality of the case management and calendaring process, a Magistrate Judge Courtroom Deputy must have a flexible work schedule and have a work history reflecting dependability. The ability to work 8 hours per day, 5 days a week, and additional hours as needed is necessary.
• Minimum typing ability of 45 wpm.
