Position Summary The Fire Protection Engineer is a licensed Professional Engineer focusing on fire protection, and will be pivotal in ensuring that our projects meet the highest standards of quality, safety, and innovation. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing shop drawings for fabrication and installation, managing submittals to clients and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ's), ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and standards, and driving continuous improvement in technology and processes. Additionally, this role includes responsibility for presales engineering and post-release project management. Key Responsibilities • Lead and mentor a team of engineers and designers, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement. • Oversee design of team members who need to work under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer to obtain their Professional Engineering license. • Embrace Ironsmith Fire's core values in all engineering activities. • Perform and review the preparation of detailed shop drawings for fabrication and installation of fire protection systems. • Perform and review hydraulic calculations to ensure systems are designed efficiently and effectively. • Ensure all designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and regulations. • Prepare and submit engineering documents to clients and AHJ's, ensuring timely approval. • Ensure all submittals meet client requirements and are compliant with industry standards and local regulations. • Work with the Chief of Design and Engineering to implement and maintain quality control processes within the engineering team to ensure the highest level of workmanship. • Work with the Chief of Design and Engineering to drive innovation in design and engineering processes, leveraging new technologies and methodologies to improve efficiency and effectiveness. • Stay current with industry trends and advancements in fire protection engineering and incorporate relevant technologies into Ironsmith Fire's practices. • Lead initiatives to improve design and engineering tools, software, and processes. • Collaborate with the Client Solutions team during presales engineering to develop solutions that meet client needs and project requirements. • Provide post-release project management, ensuring projects are executed on time, within budget, and to the satisfaction of clients. Education And Experience • Hold a Professional Engineer (PE) license in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline. • Five plus years of experience in fire sprinkler system design and engineering, with progressively increasing levels of responsibility including leadership or a managerial role, such as a team lead or project manager. • Professional certifications related to fire protection, business management, or leadership are advantageous, such as NICET Certification. Fire Protection Engineers (FPEs) protect lives and property. They plan and design engineering projects that prevent fires from occurring and minimize the impact of those fires that do occur. Fire protection systems detect, control and reduce fire and smoke in buildings and structures. FPEs recommend materials, equipment, and systems to assist in safeguarding life and property against fire, analyze how fire behaves and model how safety features perform in a fire. They assess the fire protection needs within projects and document those in design analysis or basis of design reports. They create design documents for fire protection systems, including drawings, using computer-aided design (CAD) or Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, and specifications that are used to direct the construction of buildings and systems in the field. FPEs perform construction progress inspections and acceptance tests / commissioning to ensure that installed systems comply with the construction documents and applicable codes and that they function as intended. A Fire Protection Engineer performs engineering work under close supervision requiring the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to carry out a sequence of related fire protection engineering tasks such as the preparation of simple plans, designs, calculations, costs and bills of material in accordance with established codes, standards and drawings. The role applies professional concepts and expands upon learning while performing various phases of engineering work receiving detailed instruction. Our team works either a 4x10 located out of CFA site facilities with every Friday off. You will provide fire protection engineering support related to facility systems management, engineering evaluations, research, project engineering and project development. Identify and analyze fire hazards in work control through fire hazard analyses. Oversee proper installation, maintenance, and upgrade of fire detection, suppression, and communication systems. Identify and propose resolutions to fire and life safety code deficiencies. You will report to the manager of our Occupational Safety and Health Department. Job Summary: This position is for a Senior Fire Protection Engineer who will work on various projects as part of the NS&E engineering execution center team. The projects that will be assigned involve government work throughout various sectors, including DOD and DOE. The successful candidate must have strong organization and teamwork skills, proven problem-solving skills, can-do attitude, and the design to innovate designs. In this role, you will provide technical leadership in the design and development of fire protection systems and equipment. You will review and approve contractors’ submittals, attend contract meetings, and assist in determining needed changes and with final testing. Your work will lead the implementation of programs and procedures that promote fire safety. This role will be based in Knoxville, TN with period business travel, as required. Major Responsibilities: • Participates in the design and development of Fire Protection systems and equipment including sprinkler, fire pump, fire alarm and mass notification systems in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements​ • Analyzes life safety requirements for buildings, including building code compliance, occupancy determination, occupant load calculations and egress analysis​ • Performs on-site fire protection system evaluations and assists with final system testing​. Performs building and fire code analyses and interpretations​ • Provides technical guidance in review of engineering analyses and engineering judgments for alternative fire barrier systems, opening protectives, and penetration firestops​ • Participates in pre-award meetings, as appropriate​. Attends post-award contract meetings, such as post-award kickoff meetings (PAK), preconstruction conferences, informal or formal partnering meetings, schedule acceptance meeting, design review meetings, weekly progress meetings, and Facility Turnover Planning Meetings​ • Visits construction sites to monitor progress and resolve construction issues in a timely manner​ • Assists in identifying the need for a modification to scope, cost and/or schedule based on collaboration with the construction contractor, Supported Command, designer of record, PM and/or other entities​ • Supports the issuance of requests for proposal by assisting in determining needed changes and writing technical scopes of work​ • Assists with construction quality assurance by performing code required special inspections or required observations​ • Participates in implementing programs and procedures to ensure employee and facility safety is in accordance with all OSHA, NFPA and Life Safety Code requirements​. Maintains current knowledge of all building and fire protection codes and regulations to assure compliance Education and Experience Requirements: • Requires bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 5 years of relevant experience or 9 years of relevant work experience. • Must be a US citizen. • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen and background check. Required Knowledge and Skills: • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the fire, life safety, and building codes – including UL and Fm standards. • Must be familiar with commercial risk management and fire protection protocol. • Familiar with regulations and industry codes and standards affecting complex engineering work within discipline. • Understands technical issues and costs related to selection of typical design features within discipline. • Knows how to develop all standard deliverables within discipline. • Experience in working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1, MIL-Q-9858A, or ISO-9000. • Familiar with effort required to prepare standard discipline deliverables and knows how to prepare standard engineering budgets and schedules within discipline. • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written). • Knowledge and ability to utilize Microsoft office suite of products. • (Preferred) – Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering. • (Preferred) – Registered Professional Engineer in the USA.
