Looking for an awesome job in the Coroner's office? The County Coroner seeks a well rounded individual to fill a vacant position of Secretary/Deputy Coroner. This is a challenging position for an organized, multidimensional individual who is responsible for a wide variety of confidential administrative duties and office support to the Coroner and Deputy Coroner. Deputy Coroner

Position Details

This position is responsible for investigating the cause and matter of death for all deaths in Aiken County. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Note: The list below is not comprehensive; this job is also responsible for other duties as assigned. 1. Investigation – This position is responsible for conducting a thorough investigation on the cause and manner of death. In the event of a home death, found body, drowning, homicide, suicide or traffic accident, this position is dispatched to the crime scene by 911-dispatch. Once the crime scene has been secured by law enforcement and is released to the deputy coroner, the deputy coroner will thoroughly document the situation. This includes taking numerous photographs, talking to people at the scene including law enforcement, and taking copious notes. The deputy coroner may take evidence after law enforcement has released the scene to the coroner. The deputy coroner is further responsible for the removal of the body from the scene, for talking with and coordinating with the family members, and for ordering and attending the autopsy. Following the autopsy, the deputy coroner will release the body to the funeral director and family, and ensure the appropriate paperwork and death certificate is signed. In the event of a natural death, the deputy coroner will work with the family/hospice/hospital to ensure proper notation of the death certificate. When there is a suspicion of drug overdose, the deputy coroner must take whatever time is necessary to investigate medical records or any other records that would help determine the nature of the death. 2. Documentation – This position will complete all reports required by the local, state and federal government for each incident. Such reports can be complex, and require up to eight hours to complete. As with the investigation, the deputy coroner needs to coordinate information gathering with different law enforcement agencies, the EMS team, toxicology laboratories, pathology and family members in order to be complete and accurate. 3. Expert Witness – This position may need to testify in court on a case, and as such, must have a good grasp of each situation and all of the facts surrounding the investigation and matter of death. This includes understanding the toxicology reports, the pathologist report, and other law enforcement investigation reports well enough to provide expert testimony under oath. This position operates with autonomy, although due to limited staffing, works collaboratively as needed to assist others and the Coroner in managing the escalating case load. The major challenge is the management of the case load, as well as the emotional impact of such work on a constant basis. Position Details

Summary Under general direction of the Medical Examiner (ME) or Chief Deputy Medical Examiner (CDME), collaboratively investigates deaths to assist with determination of the cause and manner of death, determine jurisdiction, and determine disposition of the body, in accordance with applicable state laws governing the office of the Medical Examiner. Performs related duties as required. This is a casual/part-time position. With no set schedule of work hours. This position will be assigned to on-call duty. May be required to take consecutive shifts to allow for time off duty of the ME or CDME. Must be able to respond as soon as possible to a death scene or be able to take verbal reports from reporting agencies. Examples of Duties Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Responds to death calls, protects and takes charge of the body in a manner that is respectful of the deceased and consistent with the preservation of evidence. Makes pronouncements of death. Cooperates with law enforcement agencies in the investigation of the circumstances surrounding the death. Enters the death scene when assured by the investigating agency that the scene is safe, and any potential evidence has been recorded or secured. Performs death scene investigations with the primary objective of obtaining information and creating narrative and/or written reports to assist the ME and CDME in the determination of the cause and manner of the death of the decedent. Confirms or assists with the determination of the identity of the deceased person, obtains demographic information of the deceased, interviews witnesses when able as to the circumstances of the death. Examines and photographs the scene at the location of the body. Where practical and respecting the privacy of the deceased, undresses, examines and records in detail by photographic and written means the external appearance of the body. Where not practical, facilitates the removal of the body to a location suitable for a comprehensive examination. Assists law enforcement with the preservation and collection of evidence that may assist in the determination of the circumstances of the death. With appropriate training or experience may obtain samples and specimens of human remains for laboratory analysis. May accompany the body to and observe the autopsy when ordered by the ME or CDME. Collects the decedent’s medications and other loose personal items as appropriate and secures them in the appropriate locked closet of the office. Notifies next of kin personally or in conjunction with other law enforcement and judicial agencies of the death. Informs the next of kin as to the process for removal of the decedent from the death scene and the investigative process. Requests the next of kin to choose a provider for the final disposition of the decedent. Refers questions as to cause and manner of death to the ME or CDME. Maintains confidentiality of all information obtained in accordance with State and Federal Law and Department policy. Direct and indirect investigative information shall remain confidential and property of the ME Office. Provides scheduled availability and reports on-call changes to Calumet County dispatch and the ME. Attends meetings and seminars for the purposes of case and policy review and continuing education. Maintains current knowledge of methods and procedures through professional literature, publications, internet, etc. Establishes and maintains effective public relations and working relationships with law enforcement agencies, hospital staff, emergency medical personnel, funeral directors, and general public. Acts as an advocate for the deceased by preserving dignity and safeguarding property. The Forensic Investigator is the journey level classification in the Coroner Specialist series. The Forensic Investigator is responsible for death investigations, case management and day-to-day administrative duties of the Coroner’s Office. This position performs a variety of administrative, forensic, and analytical duties in the field of death investigation. Work is characterized by conducting investigations of death under the coroner’s jurisdiction, case management and the day-to-day administrative duties of the Coroner’s Office. GENERAL DEFINITION: The Office of the Coroner is a 24 hour, 7 days a week, 365 days a year operation. This position consists of highly specialized investigative work at the full performance level. This class obtains information on deaths reported to the Coroner's Office. A position in this class investigates deaths, making determinations of the existence of a criminal act or negligence in each investigation. SUMMARY: The Deputy Coroner position serves as a liaison between the Coroner, law enforcement and the crime lab, focusing on examining the remains of a body in order to determine both how and why a death occurred, to include but not limited to identification of the body, photographing the crime scene, notification of the next of kin and transportation of the body to the crime lab. This job is a part time, non-merit system position without benefits ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties include but are not limited to: • Assist County Coroner in determining the manner and cause of death, whether natural or violent, as well as to identify the remains • Conduct investigative work at the death scene and may include interpretation of autopsy results • Assist the coroner in an investigation by speaking to witnesses, gathering information such as phone numbers, names and addresses, secure potential evidence or administer first aid if necessary • Prepare necessary forms including the decedent death certificate and any additional state or local forms required • Interviewing victims, witnesses, and law enforcement officers to gather information and facts on assigned criminal cases • May be called to testify in trial proceedings • Consult with State Crime Lab personnel to evaluate test findings and results • Preparing reports and summary case work for Coroner’s Office • Conducting special investigations at the direction of the Coroner or his / her designee • Operating a county vehicle in conducting county-related business • Other duties may be assigned • Able to lift 150 pounds QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
