The Department of Chemistry at Whitworth University invites applications for a Lecturer in Chemistry with a focus on teaching general chemistry lectures and laboratories. The successful candidate will primarily teach in the general chemistry curriculum, with additional assignments in lower-division laboratories or courses as departmental needs arise. The ability to teach organic chemistry labs is highly desirable, and opportunities may be available to teach upper-division biochemistry lectures or labs for qualified and interested applicants. This position includes a teaching load of approximately 21 credit hours per academic year. In addition to teaching responsibilities, the lecturer is encouraged to engage in departmental meetings, collaborative activities, and faculty development opportunities that support student learning and reflect a commitment to the mission of the university.
Department Overview
The Chemistry department provides a stimulating environment in which students can use the latest technology in course and lab work and also have opportunities for advanced research in collaboration with faculty. The department provides access to modern instrumentation including a multinuclear 400 MHz NMR, GC/MS, DSC, two HPLC systems, a fluorimeter, several UV-Vis and IR spectrometers, and various other instruments supporting individual research projects. The chemistry department is in Robinson Science Hall, a 63,000 sq. ft. facility housing state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories. The small class sizes typical in the department encourage students to become active learners in their own education and helps foster close relationships between students and faculty members. We seek scholars who enjoy collaborating with undergraduate students and who seek the challenge of inspiring students to reach their full potential.
The Chemistry department typically graduates 20-30 students with a chemistry major each year. Recent graduates have been accepted to excellent chemistry graduate schools (for example: Notre Dame, University of Washington, UC Berkeley, and Cal Tech), medical schools (for example: University of Washington, University of Pennsylvania, and Boston University), in addition to finding employment opportunities directly after graduation.Primary teaching responsibilities include general chemistry lectures and labs; additional teaching assignments may consist of other lower division laboratories and courses as needed; an ability to teach organic laboratories would be desirable. Upper-division biochemistry lectures or laboratory courses may be available to qualified and interested applicants. The anticipated annual teaching load is contingent on need but is anticipated to be 21 credit hours.
Other Opportunities include participating in departmental meetings, activities, and faculty development opportunities.
• Master’s or PhD in Chemistry or a closely related field. All sub-disciplines of chemistry are encouraged to apply.
• Evidence of promise in effectiveness at college-level teaching (demonstrated effectiveness preferred).
