Job Title: Fabricator/Fitter up to $25/hr
Job Description
This role focuses on fabricating and fitting structural steel components in a busy job shop manufacturing environment. You will interpret job orders, bills of materials, and blueprints to plan and execute fabrication tasks, including layout, cutting, drilling, punching, and preparing assemblies for welding. The position requires strong layout and fitting skills, familiarity with MIG and flux core welding, and the ability to work efficiently from detailed drawings in a production setting.
Responsibilities
• Review job orders and bills of materials (BOM) to identify and gather all required parts and materials for each project, ranging from simple to complex assemblies.
• Study drawings and blueprints to understand project requirements and create accurate cut lists for structural steel components.
• Determine required dimensions such as length, width, and angles for each piece based on blueprints and project specifications.
• Lay out material and mark locations for holes to be punched or drilled according to drawings and fabrication standards.
• Prepare parts for assembly, including cleaning, aligning, and organizing components prior to fitting and welding.
• Fit and tack up weldments to ensure proper alignment and structural integrity before final welding.
• Collaborate with welders, press brake operators, shear operators, and punch press operators as needed to complete jobs efficiently.
• Work effectively in a job shop environment, handling a variety of custom and non-repetitive projects.
• Maintain a safe and organized work area, following all shop safety procedures and using required personal protective equipment.
• Read and interpret blueprints and BOMs accurately to minimize errors and rework.
• Support production goals by meeting deadlines and adapting to changing priorities and workloads.
Essential Skills
• Hands-on fabricating and fitting experience with structural steel components.
• Strong layout skills, including the ability to mark and measure materials accurately from blueprints and BOMs.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and bills of materials in a fabrication environment.
• Previous job shop manufacturing experience, working on varied and custom projects.
• MIG welding experience, with the ability to tack and assemble weldments safely and accurately.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
• Experience with flux core and dual shield welding processes.
• Press brake operation experience in a metal fabrication environment.
• Shearing experience, including setting up and operating shears for steel cutting.
• Punch press experience for punching holes and forming operations.
• Any welding certifications, apprenticeships, or formal education in fabrication or related fields are considered a plus.
• Background in structural steel fabrication and fitting is highly beneficial.

Work Environment
This position operates in a job shop manufacturing environment focused on steel fabrication, forming, punching, rolling, machining, installation, repair, and specialty burning. The team consists of approximately 40 employees, all working on first shift, across two adjacent buildings where you may work in either location depending on project needs. The shop conditions vary with the seasons, becoming hot in the summer and cold in the winter, so comfort with typical industrial temperature fluctuations is important. Standard safety attire is required, including safety glasses and steel-toe shoes, and you may wear jeans and an appropriate T-shirt as part of the casual shop dress code. Working hours are Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with typical weekly hours increasing to approximately 45–50 hours during the summer, and occasional additional hours as needed to meet production demands.

Position Details
Welder/Fitters assemble and fit to drawing dimensions of all kinds of structural, plate and mechanical materials into all types of assemblies. Applicants must be proficient in the full skills of the trade and able to weld a large variety of materials. Must be able to weld in all positions with a high degree of proficiency utilizing full skills of the trade including knowledge of common heat reactions of structural metals. Must be certifiable.
• Receives instructions, prints, sketches and work orders.
• Reads and interprets blueprints and plans the fitting operation.
• Directs and assists in handling and spreading of material, assembling material into required relationships according to detail drawings; handling and placing detail material in assembly, placing bolts, drift pins and other fastening deceives in proper locations.
• Lays out work lines or fits up jigs for positioning material when required; checks, squares, and scribes all detail connections.
• Responsible for work conforming to drawings and notes thereon.
• Cleans up material by grinding or chipping.
• Burns and tack welds for assembly purposes. Burns, copes and bevels and straightens material. Does minor layout.
• Spot paints for identification marks.
• Follow welding procedures.
• Moves material to and from the work area. Moves welding equipment to material when necessary. Positions component parts on a table held by a fixture or jib, tacking when required.
• Welds on ground level, above ground, and below ground, in any required position.
• Chips, peens and grinds material to prepare for welding or finish.
• Welds structural material such as plates, girders, tanks, etc., occasionally involving uncommon structural metals or machine metals under close tolerances of heat application and workmanship.
• Straightens materials by heat or flame. May perform scarfing.
• Must take and pass welding tests such as AWS D1.1.
• Keeps work area clean.
• Other duties may be assigned.

Perform General Physical Activities. Perform physical activities that require moving your whole body and considerable use of your arms and legs, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials. Must have the ability to work at elevated heights.
Problem Solving. Must be able to problem solve and make independent decisions regarding weld draws while fabricating and addressing other issues.

• Evaluate all engineering drawings and ensure implementation according to specifications for assembly of large structural and mechanical fabrications
• Perform work with understanding and ability to operate various hand and power tools
• Keep your work areas cleaned up
• Analyze diagrams and specifications and cut/form plate metal as required with applicable equipment
• Evaluate finished products and perform quality checks on products
