Job Description
A turner machinist specializes in operating lathes and milling machines to shape metal or plastic components with high precision. Key responsibilities include interpreting technical drawings, setting up machinery, selecting appropriate tools, conducting quality inspections, and performing maintenance to manufacture or repair shafts, bearings, and gears according to exact tolerances.
Key Responsibilities- Machine Operation: Operates conventional lathe, milling machines, and drilling equipment to turn, face, thread, and bore.
- Interpretation of Blueprints: Reviews engineering drawings, blueprints, or samples to determine precise machining requirements and dimensions.
- Precision Measurement: Uses micrometres, vernier calipers, and gauges to check parts for quality assurance, ensuring they meet tight tolerances.
- Manufacturing and Repair: Produces new components (shafts, housings) or refurbishes worn/damaged parts to restore machine functionality.
- Setup and Tool Selection: Sets up machinery and selects the correct cutting tools, feeds, and speeds for different materials.
- Maintenance: Performs routine cleaning and preventative maintenance on machines and tools.
- Safety Compliance: Adheres to safety protocols, including wearing protective equipment and maintaining a clean workplace.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives in machining processes and standards.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and other applicable quality standards.
- Matric/Grade 12
- Trade Test Certificate (Turner machinist or Fitter and Turner)
- Minimum 5 years' experience in a machining environment.
- Experience in earthmoving equipment will be advantageous.
- Experience with CNC and conventional machines.
- Strong understanding of technical drawings and tolerances.
- Strong knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
- Attention to detail and precision.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Analytical thinking and problem-solving.
- Computer literacy (MS Office, CAD).
- CNC programming will be an advantage.
