Position SummaryThe Code 14 Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of packed Spekboom (Portulacaria afra) cuttings, plants, or saplings in crates using a vehicle as supplied by NatCarbon. This will mostly be a 12-ton truck with a trailer. This role requires extreme attention to detail regarding the loading, securing, and documentation of delicate plant materials to ensure minimal damage, accurate inventory tracking, and compliance with agricultural transport standards.
Roles and Responsibilities Load Management & Cargo Protection (Spekboom Specific)- Safe Handling: Ensure Spekboom crates are packed and stacked appropriately to prevent damage during transit.
- Loading/Offloading: Supervise or assist in the loading and unloading of crates, ensuring plants are not crushed or overstressed.
- Securing Load: Ensure the load is balanced and secured to prevent shifting, which could damage delicate succulent stems.
- Load Integrity: Monitor the integrity of crates and ensure crates are secured to prevent crates from falling off the trucks on the poor gravel roads traversed.
- Inventory Verification: Verify that the number of crates and Spekboom quantity on the vehicle corresponds exactly with the loading documents (delivery notes/invoices).
- Proof of Delivery Management: Ensure Proof of Delivery (POD) notes are signed by the client, with all discrepancies noted and communicated to the logistics manager immediately.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate, clean, and up-to-date logbooks, trip sheets, and fuel records.
- Defect Reporting: Immediately report any inventory damages, shortages, or discrepancies, as well as vehicle defects.
- Pre-Trip & Post-Trip Inspections: Conduct daily checklists on the truck and trailer to ensure roadworthiness, focusing on brakes, tires, and lights.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all traffic laws, road safety regulations (National Road Traffic Act), and company policies at all times.
- Vehicle Maintenance: Maintain a clean and tidy cabin and load area.
- Vehicle Service: Ensure timely arrangements for truck services at the required intervals.
- Professional Representation: Interact with clients/nursery staff professionally, providing updates on delivery times and maintaining a positive company image.

- Frequent travel within the Eastern and Western Cape anticipated, including to remote locations. Travel may on occasion cross weekends and holidays to accommodate schedules. Work hours may be irregular.

- License: Valid Code 14 (EC) driver's license.
- Permit: Valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
- Experience: Minimum 3-5 years' experience driving articulated trucks (superlinks) with contactable references.
- Experience in Agriculture/Logistics: Advantageous to have experience transporting fragile, palletised, or perishable goods.
- Documentation Skills: Exceptional accuracy in paperwork and record-keeping.
- Physical Ability: Ability to work long hours and perform physically demanding work.
- Background: Clean criminal record.
- Defensive Driving: Proactive hazard perception, understanding how to manage heavily loaded vehicles in adverse weather conditions, and maintaining safe following distances.
- Offroad Driving: Driving of trucks on poor dirt roads damaged during adverse weather conditions.
Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend a driver's evaluation to verify skills prior to appointment.
